The meeting began with the saying of the Pledge of Allegiance.
WORD OF THE DAY  "Selflessness"
By: Dan Naranjo
Dan felt this captured the Rotarian spirit and reminded him of a favorite saying: “God’s gift is not how one feels about oneself; it is how one should make others feel about themselves.”

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Kris Young again reminded people to sign up for meeting roles.

Kris also reviewed the upcoming January 28 Hemmens Cultural Center concert and Fun/Fellowship that will follow at Bennigan’s.  Tickets are nearly sold out.  Folks are asked to indicate if they will be joining the group at Bennigan’s.

January birthdays and anniversaries were announced as well.

Dan Naranjo will be orchestrating this year’s Rotary Reads event on February 9, 8:30AM.  The book will be The History of Rock, Paper, Scissors .  A sign up sheet is being circulated.

On January 29 at Deer Park theater there will be a showing of a documentary about the 1985 Bears.

Mary Holcomb,

our Sergeant at Arms reminded all that $10 is due for each guest attending breakfast and there is a $5 fine if one signs up for a meeting role and is absent without finding a substitute.

A Barrington Reads event is also planned for April.  The book will be A Path Appears, authored by the same woman that wrote Half of the Sky.   The Rotary is actually referenced in A Path Appears.

Nancy Shepherdson

Assistant District Governor, shared there would be a District Meeting on February 17 at the Harper College Wojcik Center addressing Social Media and Fund Raising for Rotary.  Also, a Powerpoint version of the ABC’s of Rotary will be available.

Gillette Johnson reminded the group that the New Member Committee would be meeting.

Elizabeth McGrath asked that everyone turn in their program survey responses.

BRAG BUCKS

Steve Hollis announced he was celebrating paying off his mortgage.

Elizabeth McGrath said a “hello” from Marvin Hill who is finishing his work with the Archdiocese of Chicago and should be back with the BBRC after the end of February.

Keith Hanson

offered that he and his wife were part of a 1.5M people sociological experiment when the incoming missile warning sounded in Hawaii.  What a way to find out what one would do in a crisis!

FUNDRAISERS

            MARDI GRAS - REDUX 2018
Cards were again provided at each table for members to fill in with any Rendezvous auction/ raffle items they have or have received commitments for.  The success of the Rendezvous event depends upon all of the members doing their best to contribute.  These cards will be available at the BBRC tables each meeting up until April.  Big ticket items that would draw a lot of interest can be displayed on the event/ auction website in advance when the Rendezvous team is aware of the item details.

As a reminder to members and any Rendezvous attendees: 91-97% of all Rendezvous proceeds go to designated Rotary causes!

        GUEST SPEAKER - DINA MORGAN
"MANE IN HEAVEN" DIR OF DEVELOPMENT

Dina Morgan, the current Development Director of Mane in Heaven, provided an exuberant presentation detailing the history of this 501©(3) that provides miniature therapy/ comfort horses for visits to
hospitals, nursing homes, libraries, schools and first responder sites. The little gym shoe-clad horses go through extensive training to be able to calm adults and children; provide a novelty that helps people cope with issues and generally delight those who come in contact with them.  The mini horses are stabled at the Hill n Dale properties in Barrington Hills and an all volunteer staff cares for them, trains them and accompanies them on their visits.  The horses are certified under Pet Partners.  The Rotary can definitely help this organization through “likes” on Facebook, word of mouth, offering ideas on visit sites and direct donations.  There is not a charge for visits, with the expectations that donations and sponsorships cover these costs.  It was discussed that the mini horses might be a great addition to the BBRC Kid Fest.  For more information check the website

FUN & FROLIC

Once again the room was stymied by many of Elizabeth McGrath’s Fun and Frolic with American History questions.  Tables were asked to caucus on answers.  We all need to go back to school!

RAFFLE

Mark Gibson was the $10 raffle winner this week.

Jim Otis did not draw the white marble for the current $82 jackpot.
NEXT MEETING

The next meeting on Thursday, January 25, 2018, at the Garlands, we will have a presentation on Active Shooter and Scam prevention or action.

FINAL ANNOUNCEMENTS & REMINDERS

Everyone was reminded to sign up on the “Duty Roster” to help cover each meeting’s areas of responsibility.

As offered, we will be collecting the Auction/Raffle Item cards from every table at each meeting, so members are encouraged to consider what they or their contacts can contribute to the success of Rendezvous.

     Volunteers
Have a great week everyone!
