This coming week our speaker will be Captain Raymond Leung. He is in command of the Naval Station Great Lakes and has extensive service and command experience.
Thank you Steve for leading last week's meeting and outlining multiple activities that continue and include the crocus initiative, the Candidate Forum volunteer opportunity at the Library the morning of Oct. 6th and the Club display for Volunteer Match the afternoon of Oct. 7th. See Steve Hollis as he has kindly stepped forward to take that lead on this last activity. Thanks Steve again.
And thank you Randall and Connie for your sponsorship for our club at the recent Lyric Opera event enjoyed by all. It was a very fine performance and provided great visibility among many who knew little about Rotary.
Oct. 13th will be a celebration day with BACT that will include recognizing BBRC as providing them the support needed for an equipment grant. Come dressed and prepared to plant tree that afternoon from 1-3 p.m.
Please do continue to check our website including registration for friends and interested parties for our Oct 16th 30th Anniversary celebration. Check your email for a separate guest invitation for you and your partner. Also check your email for a new opportunity to register to ride for polio - see the website for details.
Suzanne and I just returned from our Zone Institute, and that will take a full article in itself to detail. Among the many inspiring speakers and programs happening in the Rotary world was a very fine presentation given by our own Narayan regarding the challenge grant in WASH and Education that he secured along with our Sur Club partners, $562K !!!! One of the largest grants ever awarded. Congratulations Narayan!
Our guest speaker for the morning was Richard Kick, Chief Technology Officer, Rotary International.
Additional guests included Ryan Birch from the Long Grove Rotary.

Speaker: Richard Kick, CIO/CTO, RI
The speaker Richard Kick's intent was to cover various topics in the forefront of Rotary’s visioning such as:
“Global Membership” is being promoted as a concept. It can be considered as not a “Rotarian Without a Club”, but rather “Rotarian of Every Club.” As Rotary struggles to keep and increase its numbers, reaching out to young professionals is paramount. This generation’s lifestyle is often not structured to allow for weekly meetings. Throughout the world clubs have responded with evening meetings in bars, night clubs and other innovative venues. To pull in the next generation Rotary is saying, “join on your terms.” Let club members decide how and when they want to serve. This generation often has time to serve, but not time for meetings.
Rotary needs to improve on the Web leads it receives. Less than 10% of individuals who indicate an interest in Rotary on the website are ever contacted by their local club.
Only 5% of people involved in Rotaract later join a Rotary club. Rotary needs to focus more on that conversion with Rotaract members either joining an existing club, or starting their own. Barry Rassin has set a goal of doubling the number of Rotaractors who move on to become Rotarians.
Common complaints that Richard receives are: Why are the dues increasing? Why is the Grant Application process so tedious? Why don’t we have an App?
Worldwide there have been many Apps developed by various clubs. They lack consistency and only three Apps have been developed by Rotary International. At present there isn’t a methodology for sharing and fully utilizing the data. Clubrunner is a private service many clubs pay for. While it can be helpful, Rotary International would like to develop its own site that is simpler, eliminates some of the duplication, and makes it easier to find what you’re searching for.
In addressing who makes up Rotary, Richard pointed out that a better question to ask might be “does your club reflect your community?” Further, is a club able to measure its success by how it has helped?
Why is there the constant campaign for more money for the Foundation? While we are close to eradicating Polio, we still have work to do. With that project potentially wrapping up, Rotary International will look to take on another global project. To be able to partner with another foundation we will have to demonstrate we have the funds to participate in the project.
The lack of focus on results was discussed. While Charity Navigator does give Rotary a high rating, that is for financial responsibility. We need to better measure impact. Are lives being improved? Can we measure that? Richard’s idea is to establish a Project Center on the website where clubs can share their projects, inspire others and demonstrate sustainability.
Richard’s presentation was jam-packed with information and he closed with an invitation to contact him via email with any questions and concerns.
