    President's Message

I hope that everyone is surviving the snow, which caused our Barrington Reads to be cancelled last week.  We are waiting to hear if this can be rescheduled.

At our meeting on Feb. 8, we had an inspirational presentation by the Harper Rotaract students.  The idealism of young people is always important in keeping us focused on our own goals.  We then had a wonderful Fun and Frolic by Gillett on inspirational (and also humorous) speeches by his friend, Rotarian Cliff Dochterman.  Cliff is a former RI president and has apparently given more speeches to Rotarians than anyone else.  Gillett was very generous to purchase a book for each of us, which I have been reading over the weekend and getting motivation from.

Thanks Gillett!

There is a Tri-District conference on leadership, with the emphasis on empowering young people to be leaders.  You are to bring a protegee (not required) and be a mentor to a young person.  Scholarships will also be given out to 3 attendees and need to be applied for prior to the conference.  If you have questions, please ask Suzanne who conceived of and put this conference together!

This week our speaker is Jack Caldwell who is doing his classification talk and also a introduction in the use of ClubRunner, which is helpful if any of you need to check someone's address out or send out a mass email!  Useful information, to be sure.

We will also sit with our Rendezvous teams this week, so remember to purchase your event and raffle tickets.  Also bring any donations that you may have obtained.   Event link: http://BBRClub.gesture.com

Duties this week:
Greeter/Invocation:  Ron Hamelberg
Sargeant At Arms:  Mary Holcomb
Fun and Frolic:  Michael Pogar

February 18, Sunday:  BACT workday at Far Field, Lake Cook and Old Sutton Road. 10-12 am
March 10, Saturday:  BBRC Progressive Dinner.  Check your calendar as this week will be the final sign up so that we can plan for the event.  We will move to 3 homes/businesses.
April 14:  Empower Leaders Conference.  See attached.  Event link:   www.empowerleadersbyrotary.com
April 27, Friday evening:  Rendezvous MARDI GRAS REDUX. .  Event link:  http://BBRClub.gesture.com

Guests from the Rotaract Club of Harper College.
spoke at our meeting on Thursday Februay 8th.

Lauren Chilvers the Harper College Rotaract Club Advisor gave us a presentation on the club’s activities.

Harper College has a very strong RN Program along with a focus on jobs studies and vocational training.
Harper is an open access community college. There is a large managed scholarship program which several of the current Rotaract club members have been recipients.  The Fishing Well Rotaract Scholarship Process looks to recruit students interested in joining who are looking to give back.  There Rotaract Club is a highly energetic multi background diverse group of college age students.

Birthday Party Project is there newest program.  They plan to hold a major event at Safe Haven, a homeless shelter where they will through a Birthday party for all the children on March 8th.

Rotaract
is part of Rotary International.  Its is an organization made up of young adults between the age of 18 and 30 of different professional and educational backgrounds that is defined neither by religious nor political motives.

Gillette spoke about how one Rotarian can make a difference.  Gillette read us quotes from one of his all time favorite books “AS I Was Saying” written by Cliff Dochterman, President of Rotary International, 1992-93. The book consists of a collection of his favorite speeches and articles. Gillette also bought out Amazons supply of the book to hand out to each of the club members.                Now that’s giving back!
