Rotarians Susan Lenz and Kris Young became aware of “Operation Pollination,” which is a collaborative effort to help pollinator species. Pollinators have declined over 45 % in the past 50 years which can affect future food supply. About 85 % of the world’s plants, including fruits and vegetables, require pollinators for fertilization.  Lenz and Young looked for a help pollinators in the Barrington Area.

This is a great example of collaboration between the non-profits of our area!

Barrington Breakfast Rotary Club (BBRC)’s Environmental Committee has been active over the last twelve months in a variety of projects.

Rotary District 6440 offered a matching grant to area Rotary clubs for significant projects to help their communities.  Obtaining the grant depended on getting three or more Rotary Clubs to work together.   Therefore, BBRC spearheaded the effort to get other Rotary Clubs involved. Eight clubs agreed to submit $500 each, which was matched by the Rotary District for the purpose of installing native plants as part of a pollinator garden or monarch way-station.   The clubs involved are Barrington Breakfast, Barrington Noon, Lake In The Hills, Palatine, Mundelein-Vernon Hills, Glenview Sunrise, Schaumburg-Hoffman Estates and Long Grove-Kildeer- Hawthorn Woods.  Each club also will sign the “Operation Pollination” pledge to help pollinators.

The native plants are nectar sources in the spring, summer, and fall for pollinators and support them at every stage in their life cycles. They also stabilize landscaping, decreasing erosion during storms and filtering runoff. This selection of native plants naturally provides a beautiful outdoor area, leading to positive physical & mental health benefits.
