Mary Sneed from Relay for Life  of Barrington came in to talk with our group about her organization.

The Relay For Life of Barrington is an annual event that brings together volunteers throughout the community to support cancer survivors and their caregivers.  This year’s event will take place on Saturday, June 10 starting at 2:00 pm at Citizens Park.  The purpose of Relay For Life is to raise funds for the American Cancer Society, whose mission is to find cures and provide vital services to survivors and their caregivers.  But, the strategy for doing this is based upon community-wide engagement.  Rather than raising funds in one night or with one team, Relay For Life is promoted throughout the community and funds are raised in a variety of ways.  The belief behind this approach is to raise greater awareness and to encourage participants to make a commitment to the American Cancer Society until we finish the fight to end cancer.

At Relay For Life, cancer survivors are first invited to a survivor reception where area businesses donate provisions for a meal and refreshments.  Following the reception is the opening ceremony, when they walk the track and all volunteers are there to cheer them on and support them.  Throughout this year’s 8 hour event, teams will continuously walk to demonstrate their fight against cancer.  Charitable organizations such as Barrington Noon Rotary will be on hand to assist with parking, registration, games and activities to help make the day and night fun, memorable and worthy of continuing until we end the fight.

The Relay For Life of Barrington leadership committee is in need of volunteers to help during any hours of this year’s event.  Please contact Mary Sneed at mary.v.sneed@sbcglobal.net if you can help this year.
