Dwight Perkins’ School Design Legacy: It’s for the Kids
Chicago’s role in progressive school design is an underappreciated aspect of our architectural heritage. Evanstonian Dwight Perkins led this movement. Chicago Architecture Docent Bob Sutter will describe the fascinating life and career of Mr. Perkins, designer of 40 Chicago public schools (plus three in Evanston) during his noble and controversial five-year stint as Chief Architect for the Chicago Board of Education.
Bob Sutter is a volunteer Docent for the Chicago Architecture Center, leading student field trips, five adult walking tours (including a Northwestern University campus tour), and the famous river cruise. In his previous life, Bob spent 37 years as a “Mad Man” in the advertising business, working in account management at McCann-Erickson Los Angeles and DDB Chicago running accounts including Nestle, McDonald’s and Capital One.
