Guest Speaker Leon Walker - June 9, 2020

Guest Speaker Leon Walker

Leon I. Walker, Esq. was the guest speaker at our weekly Zoom Meeting of June 9, 2020. He was introduced by his friend and partner Scott Gendell, who is a club member of the Rotary Club of Skokie Valley.

Leon spoke about his company, DL3 Realty's real estate investments and acquisitions in and around Chicago Southside underdeveloped territory, and the effect of the recent civil unrest on his property investments.

Over 30 years ago, the principals of DL3 Realty came together to revitalize the commercial landscape of the far south side of Chicago, which had declined after the social unrest of the 1960s.

DL3 Realty has spent the past 20 years acquiring prominent commercial locations in Chicago’s urban communities in order to establish high quality education programs, professional office buildings, and national retailer anchored strip malls.

Today, DL3 Realty is a locally engaged and nationally-recognized full service real estate development firm that is dedicated to transforming communities through high-impact commercial real estate. From medical centers to grocery stores, our connection to community creates a pipeline of development opportunities that improves the quality of life for everyday Chicagoans. We continue to expand through new developments and acquisitions of commercial sites, including an active pipeline of over $100 million in commercial projects designed to elevate Chicago's urban communities.

Leon Walker, who was raised on Chicago’s South Side, is an experienced corporate real estate professional who is passionate about revitalizing Chicago's underserved communities. In his community development work, Walker has been involved in structuring over $100 million in New Markets Tax Credit transactions.

He is involved in many community initiatives including the Greater Chicago Food Depository, Civic Federation of Chicago, Marshall Bennett Institute of Real Estate at Roosevelt University and the government relations committee of the International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC).

DL3’s developments have won numerous awards including the LISC-Chicago Most Outstanding Development Award in 2009, 2017 and most recently the 2020 award for our Jewel Osco grocery store in Woodlawn, which we developed in partnership with Scott Gendell of Terraco (https://map.lisc-cnda.org/2020/cnda/dl3-realty-and-terraco-real-estate-for-the-woodlawn-jewel-osco).

Week 46 Foundation Minutes

This message comes from Rotary Voices on June 9th written by 7390 (Pennsylvania) DG Paddy Rooney. It is condensed below:

“We were built for this.” These few words, spoken by Rotary International Director Jeffry Cadorette and General Secretary John Hewko at a zoom gathering of district governors and governors-elect. They offer a profound vision for Rotary in the months and years to come as we move through this pandemic into the future which awaits us.

DG Rooney writes about how the CoVid-19 pandemic has changed our very modus operandi from its structured and formalized process into something that is already more dynamic and flexible while still meeting the needs of our members. The challenge before us goes much deeper than just sustaining our clubs, our community outreach, and our fundraising programs. It stretches into the very heart of our communities, into the very being of our existence as members of those communities, and as forces for change in the future. As Rotarians, 1.2 million strong, we are embedded deep into the life of our communities throughout the world. We represent all sectors, trades, and businesses. But more importantly, we are leaders in our communities.

Who will heal the rifts and divisions exposed by the pandemic, reach across the divide, and rebuild a sense of unity that says we can and will make a difference in the lives around us? As Rotarians, we are best positioned to lead the rebuilding, reforming, and reshaping that will be needed in our communities. This is who we are and this is what we do. Indeed, you could say that “we were built for this.” We know our communities better than anyone else. We know its strengths and weaknesses, good and bad, joys and sorrows. We know, and in many cases, we love our communities. We care about what happens and seek the very best for our communities.

Whether in clubs large or small, whether in e-clubs or passport clubs, whether we meet in person or virtually, whether we are Interactors, Rotaractors or Rotarians, we are one in Rotary spirit. With the resources of Rotary International behind us, we can help rebuild our broken and shattered communities. Indeed “we were built for this.” This is our time, this is our moment, this is our call. We can and will do this because we are Rotarians
