Richard Rosen (picture not available), literacy chair for Rotary District 6440 and a member of the Wheeling Rotary Club, was our guest speaker. His subject was Early Childhood Literacy, and how this program can save a child from a life of poverty and crime.
After retiring from his business practices over 12 years ago, Richard became interested in childhood education when he was elected to District 21 School Board. He served on US Representative Bob Dold’s and State Representative Carol Sente’s Educational Advisory Boards. He also served on the University of Arizona’s College of Education Advisory Board.
Who is Jack Blane? Many of us know him as a Rotarian leader in District 6440, a Past District Governor, a fellow Rotarian member, a neighbor or a friend. But Jack was a champion – a dedicated road warrior who traveled the world since the 1970’s, to convince governments, donors and health care professionals to join in the fight to eradicate polio. Jack was a leader because he was persuasive, persistent and personable!
He also led by example. Over his many years as a Rotarian, Jack, a Legacy Society member, donated $1 million to The Rotary Foundation to support the polio eradication effort. Since his death in March, 2018, his family has chosen to continue to support the END POLIO NOW effort by donating an additional $500,000 in cash for Rotary’s eradication efforts. When you calculate Jack’s Rotary Footprint, at a cost of $3.00 to vaccinate a child completely (6 doses needed), Jack has saved 500,000 children from paralysis, potential death, or possible other polio-related ailments. And that doesn’t begin to include the continued impact of his legacy through matches from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
