Guest Speaker Sheila A. Weinberg, CPA, Truth in Accounting.
 
At our July 7 meeting Sheila A. Weinberg, CPA, Truth in Accounting, founder & CEO, spoke about government finances. Her organization's mission is to educate and empower citizens with understandable, reliable, and transparent government financial information.
 
The highlights of her talk included:
  • The federal government doesn't report Social Security and Medicare promises because government officials believe that any benefits are owed besides the checks currently written.
  • The state of Illinois used numerous shenanigans to "balance" its budget, such as including loan proceeds as revenues, hiding bills and not including the pension portion of employee compensation cost.
  • Most local governments are also experiencing financial difficulties.
 
Weinberg emphasized that citizens are not given the information needed to truly participate in their governments.  Truth in Accounting is working to educate the public about these budgeting and accounting issues and needs assistance, like speaking engagements to civic and social organizations, like ours.
