It's hard to believe, but this is my last E-Bulletin message to write. We will take a look back over this year at the July 8th meeting, so I'll save most of my retrospective for that meeting. Thank you all for the part you have played in making this a good year. It's been an honor and a privilege for me to serve the club as President. I look forward to helping out in other ways next year and beyond.
Last Week's Meeting:
Chris Witte, Senior Vice President and Site Manager of the Freeport site for BASF gave a great presentation highlighting the chemistry of what they produce at the site and several plans for the future. BASF is the largest chemical company in the world and a wonderful community partner. Cindy Suggs and Tabitha Ray are terrific representatives of BASF in our club and are so appreciated as the drivers of our Public Relations efforts and the E-Bulletin. Thank you to you both!!
This week's meeting:
Kenny Vernor, our incoming President, and the officers and directors for 2014-15 will be installed this Tuesday at our regular meeting. I know Kenny will give us an idea of his vision for this year and some of the things he'd like the club to accomplish. Don't miss it!
Thank You letters received:
From teachers recognized at our recent Teacher Appreciation meeting:
First of all, thank you so much for a lovely lunch you had for us last week. It was so delicious and pleasant - we got to eat like grown-ups! And thank you for that beautiful show of support and encouragement - it meant (and means) so much! And, thank you, too, for the lovely check! Oh my goodness! That was something. And I wanted you to know how I think I am going to use it. There is this wonderful drumming curiculum that I saw at our Music Teachers' convention. It combines Rhymthm, drums & cool poetry - I think the kids will find it irresistible! It was too expensive for my budget, but with Rotary's wonderful gift, I can get it - thank you! You guys are such a blessing to our community - and I just want you to know - y'all blessed our socks off! Thank you, Margaret Gaspard - your twin :) (This is a joke between me and Margaret, as I have been mistaken for her in the community, especially when we both had short hair.)
Thank you for the Teacher of the Year money of $250.00. I am so grateful to you and Brazosport Rotary for donating this money to my classroom. I am sorry I was unable to attend the luncheon, but as Ms. Christman let you know, my grandson had brain surgery. Again, thank you!! Cindy Volk
Congratulations! to each of you who have made the impossible happen by donating your hard earned cash or by raising funds from non-Rotarians, or by raising public awareness of Rotary's worldwide effort.
Today, Southeast Asia - home to 1.8 billion people in Bangladesh, Bhutan, DPR Korea, India, Indonesia, Maldives, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Timor-Leste - has been declared Polio - Free! The media coverage has been extensive. For an example, see CNN's report here http://www.cnn.com/2014/03/22/health/india-end-of-polio/index.html?hpt=hp_c2
As recently as 2007, 70% of the world's Polio cases were found in these 11 countries. With your help, we have administered over 13 billion doses of oral Polio vaccine in this region in the last 20 years and that number has declined to zero.
If you are new to Rotary, or have not had the opportunity to participate in this largest ever public-private health initiative, you can do so on line at www.rotary.org/myrotary or with the attached Global Contribution form. But don't wait too long, only three Polio Endemic countries are left - Pakistan, Afghanistan, & Nigeria - and you will not want to be one of those who "missed the boat" by never participating in this "impossible" international service project.
Congratulations!
