Last week we had a great kick off for our Shrimp Boil. Let's all dig in and make this the best one ever. Most everything we do involves money and we are fortunate to have one of the largest fund raisers in the county. We need to get behind Henry and support him in leading the way.
This week is a REMOTE MEETING at McLean Park in Lake Jackson. We will be sponsoring the Scouting Olympics. If you can get out there early to help, that would be fantastic. Richard and Karla are heading this up.
On February 15, the Host Family Appreciation Dinner in Humble took place. A special thank you to those who hosted our exchange students. Pictured, in photo 1, Karin our Swedish exchange student; with Austin, daughter of Rotarian Mike Strobel, who will be our outbound student to Italy next year; Pictured, in photo 2, Michelle, Karin’s host mother; and Alan Wylie District 5890 Inbound Chairman.
Today, we mark the 110th Birthday of Rotary - started with a meeting of four businessmen seeking fellowship and fellow businessmen with high ethics with which they could exchange business on February 23, 1905. And how far we have come, from one club with four members, to 1.2 million members (including so many active female Rotarians!), to the greatest service organization in the world providing Community, Vocational, and International service (along with that original 2 - fellowship and the promotion of high ethics) through the work of 34,000 clubs in almost every country in the world.
We also celebrate the 30th Anniversary of the PolioPlus effort. Are you aware that over 10 million children are able to walk, run, and play today, which would be paralyzed by the Wild Polio Virus if it were not for your efforts? O r that only 359 Polio cases were reported worldwide in 2014 (down from 350,000 in 1985)? Or that India just celebrated their 4 year Polio Free Anniversary? That the network of PolioPlus inspired clinics was instrumental in combating the recent Ebola epidemic? And finally, are you aware that the continent of Africa has gone six months with zero reported Polio cases - which would leave Pakistan and Afghanistan as the only two Polio endemic countries - should the numbers hold in Africa? PolioPlus is truly a gift to the world's children.
So, today we celebrate Rotary's Birthday and your amazing service which has made our world a better one through the friendships which have changed each of our lives!
The good news and the bad news is we sold out of Full Ride tickets for Rotary Night at the Rodeo Thursday March 12 performance. However, the other good news is we still have Dinner Only tickets available for $30 that can be ordered online at the District 5890 website or purchased at the door, while the supply lasts. We have 73 Dinner Only tickets available as of right now. This means if you if you didn’t get in on the Full Ride tickets, you can still attend our social, have a wonderful Fiesta Dinner Buffet, and have some great fellowship with other Rotarians from 4:30pm to 7:00pm (as well as counting as a make-up) by making other arrangements to come through the grounds entry gate. You can purchase HLSR performance tickets through their website (only a few upper level tickets remain), purchase a day pass at the gate good for everywhere except the Stadium for $10, or already have a season ticket or badge entry privileges. If you have any questions, please contact John Cotterell at rotary@johncotterell.com or telephone 281-496-6666.
