Well, here it is. A new Rotary year is before us. Last week was a lot of fun. I hope I did not go too far with anyone in my jesting. I wanted to share with everyone a little of my journey and make the point what a great group we have here. If we all get aboard to accomplish a single goal, nothing will stop us. We are blessed with such an array of talent and skill sets.

I want to briefly repeat our goals for the year.

First, our District has set a goal of four new net members for the year. Brian Garrett, our membership chair, has said we are much better than the average club. Our goal is to have a net gain of at least ten!

Second, we do have a great Shrimp Boil Chair this year. Scott Ferry has set a goal of an increase of 10% over last year. Let’s make this happen. My thoughts are we can do better in sponsorships and we need to get Lisa better auction items.

Next, David Nicks has agreed to chair a committee to explore a large, local, multi-year project. Lisa, Rod, Scott, and I are all aboard with this. There will be room on this committee for anyone who wants to be a part of this. It is essential that we get input throughout the club and buy-in with all our members.

Also Diane Hill has agreed to chair a committee to implement Dolly Parton’s book charity. This is a program that gives books to children every month till they are five. Our new Governor, Lisa Faith Massey, has asked that we look into literacy projects. This of course, fits the bill. It is important for children to own books. Learning to read well and early will help students do well and stay in school.

We have also implemented an Ethics committee. The reason for this is two fold. First, it gives our club people that we can bounce issues off of if someone has an ethically quandary. Secondly, it is to used for conflict resolution. The committee can be used to facilitate these type of issues. I have posted in club runner the actual tasks this committee is to perform. Doug Raymer has agreed to chair this committee. Peter Cammarano and Mike Stobel have agreed to serve as members. Doug will determine if more are needed.

Lastly, we instituted a new award. The Good Samaritan Award. Again, I have posted what this award is about on Club Runner. The first GS Award went to Lucy Pendon.

I want to thank everyone for their support and kind words. Many people have told me they are willing to help me in any way they can. That means a lot.

We have a great club.

This week we have an IT program with Raymond Moore out of Houston. Come on out and enjoy the fellowship.

Be Happy, Do Good!

Stories
The “Rotary Rocks the Boat” district conference cruise was held May 1st through May 5, and the new e-club was represented by two active members. There is so much good being done in our district that you cannot leave such an event without feeling a great sense of pride in Rotarians and their ability to leave the world a better place. A district conference provides a platform for clubs to present outstanding projects and the district governor awards deserving Rotarians and honors clubs for their service and contributions. In addition to the plenary sessions we also have great fun and fellowship. Thanks to the conference committee lead by Rtn. Ronnie Hallenburger of West University Rotary and to Governor Bob Gebhard for a great conference!
A beautiful sunrise on the last day of the cruise coming back into Galveston (for those of us up early enough to see it).

Lisa Pauls receiving the award for the Large Club President of the Year from District Governor Bob Gebhard. What an honor and a testament to our terrific club!
Brazosport Rotary President 2014-15 Kenny Vernor and son Stone were welcomed onstage by 2014-15 District Governor Lisa Faith Massey and her family. Congratulations, Kenny - we know it will be a great year with you at the helm!

We had a great time with the BISD Scouts! Thank you to all who helped with this event.

Yesterday, the World Health Organization declared Polio to be a Worldwide Health Emergency. They took this step because of the high number of Polio cases reported already this year in the Importation Countries - that is, countries which had formerly eradicated Polio but have now been reinfected by travelers from the three endemic countries (Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Nigeria). This step will increase travel restrictions and will hopefully boost immunization activates in the countries most at risk of Polio outbreaks.

Stories have appeared in most major news outlets including the Houston Chronicle, the New York Times, and many others. Here is a link to the report by the WHO http://www.polioeradication.org/Portals/0/Document/Media/Newsletter/PN201404_EN.pdf I heard the news on the radio in Houston this morning. Unfortunately, the version I heard said we didn't need to worry about Polio here because we haven't seen any Polio cases here in years. The truth is that Polio is "just a plane-ride away" and if your kids or grand kids are not immunized, they are in danger of contracting Polio.

So what can you as a Rotarian do to help? We must not let the funding gap (we think we will need an additional $1 billion to finish the job) stop the progress we have made. You can donate by credit card at www.rotary.org/myrotary by clicking on Give in the top right and following the instructions to donate to PolioPlus. Rotarians should also inform others (including the press and their elected officials) of our 30 year long effort to end this crippling disease.

Congratulations to Rotarians on the District Conference cruise who donated $760 in the PolioPlus raffle there.

Attached is the current Polio Contribution Report which you can use to see how much your club members have donated to Polio eradication this Rotary Year. If your club members have given less that $20 per member, please try to reach that goal by June, 2014.

Sincerely,

Terry R. Ziegler
District 5890 Rotary Foundation Committee Chair

Yelly did a great job presenting on Thailand, her time in the US and as showing us a native Thai dance recently at our club meeting. Thank you Yelly for the wonderful learning experience and fun demonstrations!
