Tuesday was a treat with Tenson Mangwinyana speaking about the Zimbabwe Rotary club of Victoria Falls. I had an opportunity to talk with him afterwards. There are a lot of challenges in his country as you may guess. One thing that is wildly different from here that he did not discuss much is the ability the government gives preachers to address students in public schools. He even trains teachers on how to discuss various morality issues to students. If any one wants to check in with him his email is tmangwinyana@yahoo.com.

In our next meeting, Robert Worley will be presenting. He is head of The Alliance which encourages business development for our county. I am sure he will have lots of great information to share.

We are picking up a lot of new members. Lets keep this going! Get out there and introduce your self to them so they know they are welcome to our club. The new members are:

Obinna Ononobi (Obi), Manager of Operations and Marketing, Altus
Cindy Inman, the Office manager for Walter Branson ( working for Walter, we know she will need encouragement!)
Chris Gilkison, Financial Planner for Edward Jones
Fred Cordes, Semi Retired, former business owner, SCUBA instructor
Tomas Perez, General Manager for Bobby Ford (former Rotarian)
Dearle (pronounced Darrell) Marrs, General Manager for Restwood (former Rotarian)

I will be needing mentors for these. If you would like to be one get with me. As you might guess, I ain’t afraid to “voluntell” if I am short volunteers.

We also need to congratulate Norm Wood for being selected citizen of the year. What an honor. Also Jason Wadley was selected to the Hall of Fame in his industry. This too is a huge honor. We are proud to have them both as members.

See you Tuesday.

Brazosport Rotary awarded its first ever Good Samaritan Award to Lucy Pendon.
The Good Samaritan Award will be an annual award given to a Rotarian that best exemplifies, “Service Above Self.”
This is the highest award our club can bestow on a member.

Although it may not seem like it, Shrimp Boil is rapidly approaching. We are now down to six weeks to the event. The clock is ticking, and I am asking that if you have not contacted any of your sponsors from last year, please do so this week. We have t-shirts to order, a sponsor board to make, and several other items, so please do not wait until the last minute. (I know it is a Rotary tradition to not do today what can be put off again tomorrow, but let's not hold too tightly to the past please).

Also, we have our apron sponsorships available, so if you are interested, or have a sponsor interested, please let me know in the next two weeks. The aprons have a substantial lead time as well.

Thank you everyone for all that you do. I greatly appreciate everyone's hard work.

Brazosport Rotary recently thanked Jasper Thomas and Sharon Ferguson for their help in making the Scouts Picnic a huge success. Jasper and Sharon generously created the cowboy display. Len Davis is pictured giving them a check as a small token of appreciation.

Pictured from left to right are Marcia Pierce, Julia Jackym, Karin Boman, Therese Broberg and Jim Pierce in Stockholm.

For the first time in our club’s history, we made contact in person with our inbound student before the exchange year began.
Two weeks ago, Marcia and I were delighted to meet Karin Boman, our 2014 inbound student from Sweden, during a visit to Stockholm. The event was made even more memorable when two of our previous students joined us in a fika, Swedish for coffee and cake. Julia Jachym, our 2007 student from Poland, is earning a masters in management at the Stockholm School of Economics. Therese Broberg, our 1998 student from Sweden, works as a designer for H&M Stores and will become a mother in August. All of these young ladies are a credit to their countries.

Regards,

Jim

P.S. The site of the meeting was Stockholm’s famous floating restaurant, the Mälarpaviljongen.
