January 13, 2025 (Lake Jackson, TX) In the middle of January it is easy to forget about the near record setting heat experienced during the summer of 2024, here southern Brazoria County. But that hot weather and the suffering it caused, was the reason the Brazosport Rotary Club donated $2,000.00 to ‘Actions Inc’ for the purchase of fans. With donations like these, that are funded by the club’s annual Shrimp Boil, the Brazosport Rotary Club has served residents here and around the world, for over 70 years.

Actions Inc.
Actions, Inc. of Brazoria County serves the needs and enriches the lives of the Senior Citizens of Brazoria County. Actions’ services and programs enable our seniors to remain a part of their community, while maintaining their dignity, independence and purpose of life. Staying comfortable in hot weather was a project both organizations got behind! “We cannot control the weather, but we can work to help our neighbors with funds to purchase fans,” said Brazosport Rotary Club president Harold Nicoll. “Our members were very happy to make these funds available to Actions, Inc.”
The Benefit of Fans in a Heat Wave
Box fans can be very beneficial for elderly individuals during a summer of record-setting heat in several ways:
- Improved Air Circulation: Box fans are designed to move large volumes of air, which can help circulate cool air from air conditioning systems or bring in cooler outdoor air. This circulation is crucial for keeping living spaces comfortable and preventing heat buildup.
- Cost-Effective Cooling: Running a box fan typically consumes less energy than running an air conditioner, making it a more economical choice for individuals on fixed incomes. This can help elderly individuals stay cool without incurring high electricity bills.
- Supplementing Air Conditioning: For homes with air conditioning, box fans can help distribute cool air more evenly throughout a room, enhancing the overall cooling effect. By placing fans strategically, elderly people can ensure that the cool air reaches all areas of their living space.
- Reduced Humidity: Box fans can help to reduce perceived humidity levels by promoting evaporation, which can make warm air feel cooler. This effect can be particularly beneficial in humid climates, like the one we have here in southeast Texas.
- Portability and Ease of Use: Box fans are typically lightweight and portable, allowing elderly individuals to move them from room to room as needed. This flexibility can help them find relief from heat in the rooms where they spend the most time.
- Enhancing Comfort for Sleep: Using a box fan while sleeping can create white noise, which may help reduce disturbances and improve sleep quality. The circulating air can also prevent stuffiness, making for a more comfortable night’s rest.
- Encourage Hydration: The cooling effect of a fan can make individuals feel more comfortable, encouraging them to stay hydrated, which is vital during hot weather. This is particularly important for the elderly, who may be at a higher risk for dehydration.
