Trees That Feed Foundation is a not-for-profit public charity under US tax code 501(c)(3). Our organization is concerned with people in impact. Wheat, corn and rice, which together form a large percentage of the local diet, are imported. The costs of these foods continues to rise, putting increased stress on the world's poorest people. Locally based organizations and governments are constrained by limits of their resources, while arable land lies idle in many areas. Traditionally grown field crops need more land mass while trees need much less space to grow.

Dan Rutherford, current Illinois State Treasurer, was an executive with an International Company and an accomplished State Legislator. He was first elected to the Illinois Senate in 2002, following a 10-year term in the House of Representatives where he served as Assistant Republican Leader. Dan has a history of involvement in politics. He began his career as a Legislative Assistant in Springfield. In the GOP Primary of 1980, Dan coordinated a Congressional District for Governor Ronald Reagan’s campaign where he caught the eye of the Reagan National Campaign and was tapped to be the state-wide Executive Director of Illinois for the General Election. Declining an opportunity to serve in the Reagan White House, Dan stayed in Illinois, working with Governor Jim Thompson as head of the International Business Division of the Illinois Department of Commerce. In the mid 1980s, Dan joined the ServiceMaster Company and eventually became responsible for expansion of the company’s businesses internationally, licensing services in sixteen different countries. As a young person, Dan enjoyed camping, fishing, and adventure. In high school he was a foreign exchange student to Barbados. After graduating from college, he back-packed across Europe and in his mid-twenties he took a few months to lead safaris in Kenya. Dan learned to sail boats and crewed for numerous Chicago to Mackinaw Island Races, competed in regattas off of Melbourne, and cruised the southern coast of Australia. Before his 30th birthday, Dan joined a small group of adventurers and the 12 of them took three months crossing Africa in their diesel Bedford truck. They started in Algeria and went south through Niger, Chad, Cameroon, Central Africa Republic, Zaire, and Burundi. Having been on all the continents of the world but one, Dan had to figure out how to get to Antarctica before his 40th birthday. With a lot of luck and a few connections he found himself in the Falkland Islands meeting a Russian icebreaker with a group of naturalists. He spent two weeks exploring the continent, including Christmas floating on the tabular iceberg in Antarctic Sound!! Last, but not least, after skydiving in college and learning to fly in younger years, Dan decided to master scuba diving. He is an Advanced Certified Diver, logging well over 200 dives. He is a conservationist, personally establishing wildlife habitat and planting over 16,000 trees and shrubs at his rural home. |

We heard Jim Grumley speak about the Agricultural Renewal Initiative.
ARI, a 501 (c) 3 not-for-profit corporation, is applying for a TRF Global Grant. This grant enables small farmers, mostly women in developing countries, farming 1+/- acres, to earn their way out of hunger and poverty – no handouts. ARI arranges for them to make micro-loans (collections run 98%) to buy improved seeds, fertilizer, etc. and trains them in soil management, planting, weeding, harvesting and marketing. Because they are now growing crops that only feeds their family about 9 months a year, one child in 7 dies from malnutrition before reaching six years old. Their zeal to accept this opportunity is unbelievable. ARI is collaborating with Andrew Youn, Founder of One Acre Fund (www.oneacrefund.org) , who started in Kenya in 2006 with 125 |

Building Communities, Bridging Continents
Hands of Peace is an interfaith program founded in 2002 by Christian, Jewish, and Muslim members of the Glenview community. Each summer, Glenview hosts an exchange program bringing Israeli, Palestinian, and American youth together for programs of dialogue and interaction in hopes that ignorance and fear can be replaced with understanding and connection. At the Rotary Club of Glenview Sunrise club meeting on Thursday, July 22nd, returning teen-age HOP members from Israel, Palestine, and the U.S. were introduced and asked to discuss their reasons for participating in Hands of Peace. On July 28th, in keeping with Rotary's theme for this year, Building Communities/Bridging Continents, Glenview Sunrise Rotarians joined Hands of Peace participants at Flick Park for a picnic lunch made possible by funds raised by the Rotary Club of Glenview Sunrise's Annual Run.
