Glenview Sunrise Rotarian Serves in Colombia

In January, Marcia Cebula of the Rotary Club of Glenview Sunrise joined 13 other Rotarians to work at the Oasis de Jacquin agricultural school outside of Cartagena, Colombia. They enlarged the school's plant sales area, created pathways around the perimeter of the grounds, made a planting wall and drew lines on a soccer field that will be available for children attending camp at the school.  Thanks, Marcia, for your dedication on this and other international service trips!

Trees That Feed Foundation is a not-for-profit public charity under US tax code 501(c)(3). Our organization is concerned with people in impact. Wheat, corn and rice, which together form a large percentage of the local diet, are imported. The costs of these foods continues to rise, putting increased stress on the world's poorest people. Locally based organizations and governments are constrained by limits of their resources, while arable land lies idle in many areas. Traditionally grown field crops need more land mass while trees need much less space to grow.

Light Up Rotary

Posted by Erick Weingart on Jan 14, 2014

Confucius once said: "It is better to light a single candle, than to sit and curse the darkness." Although the Chinese philosopher died nearly 2,400 years before Rotary was founded, RI President-elect Gary C.K. Huang calls him "the world's first Rotarian." Inspired by his teachings, Huang chose Light Up Rotary as his theme for 2014-15.

"There are so many problems in the world, so many people that need help. Many people say, 'There's nothing I can do.' So they sit there doing nothing. Meanwhile everything stays dark," Huang told the 537 district governors and their spouses and partners who are attending the 2014 International Assembly in San Diego, California.

"The Rotary way is the Confucius way. The Rotary way is to light a candle. I light one, you light one, 1.2 million Rotarians light one. Together, we light up the world," said Huang, who is a member of the Rotary Club of Taipei in Taiwan.

After announcing his theme at the opening session of the five-day training meeting, Huang urged club members to Light Up Rotary in the coming year by hosting a Rotary Day in their community and including local Rotaract and Interact members in their service projects.

"How you Light Up Rotary is up to you," Huang said. "You know where you are strong, you know what your community needs, and you know how you can help."

Huang also shared his membership development goals, including the need for more women and young adults and his goal to increase membership to a total of 1.3 million members. He asked Rotarians to invite their spouses, family members, and friends to join Rotary.

"We need to assume leadership for building strong clubs, and that starts with bringing in new members," he said.

Addressing the status of the fight against polio, Huang noted that with the current momentum Rotary is on track to achieve full polio eradication by 2018.

"When we eradicate polio — and we will — we will have proved ourselves an organization capable of great things. And we'll be even better equipped for the next challenge we choose to take on. We'll have given the world a gift that will endure forever," he said.

By continuing to fight against polio, setting an example in local communities, and growing membership, Huang hopes to see Rotary shine brighter than ever.

"Light Up Rotary is our theme, but it is more than our theme. It is how we live in Rotary, how we think in Rotary, how we feel, how we work," Huang said. "It is how we make a difference — every day, in every club, every district, and every country where we serve."

The guest speaker at our club meeting was Illinois State Treasurer Dan Rutherford. dan-rutherford1.jpg

Dan Rutherford, current Illinois State Treasurer, was an executive with an International Company and an accomplished State Legislator.  He was first elected to the Illinois Senate in 2002, following a 10-year term in the House of Representatives where he served as Assistant Republican Leader.

Dan has a history of involvement in politics.  He began his career as a Legislative Assistant in Springfield.  In the GOP Primary of 1980, Dan coordinated a Congressional District for Governor Ronald Reagan’s campaign where he caught the eye of the Reagan National Campaign and was tapped to be the state-wide Executive Director of Illinois for the General Election.

Declining an opportunity to serve in the Reagan White House, Dan stayed in Illinois, working with Governor Jim Thompson as head of the International Business Division of the Illinois Department of Commerce.

In the mid 1980s, Dan joined the ServiceMaster Company and eventually became responsible for expansion of the company’s businesses internationally, licensing services in sixteen different countries.  ServiceMaster is a family of service companies with trade names such as ServiceMaster Clean, Terminix, Tru-Green, Merry Maids, and American Home Shield.

On the lighter side, Dan is an adventurer.  As a young person, Dan enjoyed camping, fishing, and adventure.  In high school he was a foreign exchange student to Barbados. After graduating from college, he back-packed across Europe and in his mid-twenties he took a few months to lead safaris in Kenya.

Dan learned to sail boats and crewed for numerous Chicago to Mackinaw Island Races, competed in regattas off of Melbourne, and cruised the southern coast of Australia.

Before his 30th birthday, Dan joined a small group of adventurers and the 12 of them took three months crossing Africa in their diesel Bedford truck.  They started in Algeria and went south through Niger, Chad, Cameroon, Central Africa Republic, Zaire, and Burundi.

Having been on all the continents of the world but one, Dan had to figure out how to get to Antarctica before his 40th birthday.  With a lot of luck and a few connections he found himself in the Falkland Islands meeting a Russian icebreaker with a group of naturalists.  He spent two weeks exploring the continent, including Christmas floating on the tabular iceberg in Antarctic Sound!!

Last, but not least, after skydiving in college and learning to fly in younger years, Dan decided to master scuba diving.  He is an Advanced Certified Diver, logging well over 200 dives.   He is a conservationist, personally establishing wildlife habitat and planting over 16,000 trees and shrubs at his rural home.

We heard Jim Grumley speak about the Agricultural Renewal Initiative.

ARI, a 501 (c) 3 not-for-profit corporation, is applying for a TRF Global Grant.  This grant enables small farmers, mostly women in developing countries, farming 1+/- acres, to earn their way out of hunger and poverty – no handouts.    ARI arranges for them to make micro-loans (collections run 98%) to buy improved seeds, fertilizer, etc. and trains them in soil management, planting, weeding, harvesting and marketing.  Because they are now growing crops that only feeds their family about 9 months a year, one child in 7 dies from malnutrition before reaching six years old.   Their zeal to accept this opportunity is unbelievable.  ARI is collaborating with Andrew Youn, Founder of One Acre Fund (www.oneacrefund.org) , who started in Kenya in 2006 with 125
farmers  and in 2013 has 130,000 farmers.  Andrew anticipates having 1million by 2020. See his website.   ARI will start in Nigeria.
Nigeria has Africa’s largest economy, population, and the greatest concentration of small farmers with fertile soil.  We have been there for over 6 years, are just completing ELRC’s 3-H grant of which I was the original International Primary Contact, and have many Rotarian friends there.

Rotary Vision Training Meeting from 5:00PM to about 8:30PM.  We will have dinner at 5PM and the training will begin shortly thereafter.  There will not be a morning meeting on that date, as we hope everyone can attend the visioning.

This is an opportunity for everyone in the club to provide input about our club.  The goal is to create a strategic plan document.  We will use this to set a benchmark of what the club is involved in now and for comparison next year.

We will be lead by a team from the district including past district governor Mike Ericksen, Rich Lalley, Mike Martinez, and Rodney Adams.

John Huston is a noted polar explorer

According to his website: John Huston has completed major expeditions on to the North Pole, South Pole and on Greenland. He works as a motivational speaker, safety and logistics consultant, and wilderness guide. He also works part-time in commercial real estate. He has appeared on CNN, the History Channel, the BBC, National Public Radio and in Outside Magazine, Popular Mechanics, the Chicago Tribune, and the Los Angeles Times.

John sees his expeditions as values-based endeavors that push him beyond his perceived limits and challenge him to new levels of possibility. In April of 2009 John and his expedition partner, Tyler Fish, became the first and only Americans to travel “unsupported” from land to the North Pole. This 55-day, 475-mile journey has been accomplished by only 13 expeditions and has been called the “toughest expedition on the planet.” To travel unsupported
means to travel under one’s own power without resupply. An unsupported expedition embodies the ethos of preparation, simplicity, self-reliance, and accountability—themes that John highlights in his motivational lectures. In December 2011, John and Tyler published Forward: The First American Unsupported Expedition to the North Pole.

Hands of Peace is an interfaith program founded in 2002 by Christian, Jewish, and Muslim members of the Glenview community.  Each summer, Glenview hosts an exchange program bringing Israeli, Palestinian, and American youth together for programs of dialogue and interaction in hopes that ignorance and fear can be replaced with understanding and connection. At the Rotary Club of Glenview Sunrise club meeting on Thursday, July 22nd, returning teen-age HOP members from Israel, Palestine, and the U.S. were introduced and asked to discuss their reasons for participating in Hands of Peace. On July 28th, in keeping with Rotary's theme for this year, Building Communities/Bridging Continents, Glenview Sunrise Rotarians joined Hands of Peace participants at Flick Park for a picnic lunch made possible by funds raised by the Rotary Club of Glenview Sunrise's Annual Run.
