Mar 5: Dr. John MacMillan, Vice Chancellor for Research, UCSC
We heard about the discovery of biologically active molecules from microorganisms resulting in the discovery of more than 100 new natural products This research has focused predominantly on the therapeutic areas of infectious disease and oncology, yielding an organic substance that is currently undergoing clinical trials for the treatment of renal cell carcinoma
(All this was, frankly, way above my head... but many in the audience got it... Good on them!).
Feb 26: Richard D. King High School Speech Contest
Faris Sabbah facilitatde the annual Rotary speech contest for high school students. The theme this year was Service Above Self and we heard from an incredible amount of speakers. The winner, Colette Huynh, moved on to something higher / better....

2026 Polar plunge - a swimming success!
-- Jon Winston --
The 2026 Polar plunge was a huge success! The day was beautiful, the spirit was strong and the water was COLD!! More than $70K was raised for Special Olympics by teams from Santa Cruz, Monterey and Santa Clara counties. Kudos to Team Sunrise (Lisa Krigsman - our fearless leader, Cassie Caborn, Jim Felich, BB Bullaro, Dina Blair, Suzy Stevens, and Jon & Rae Winston; and supporters Randall Leonard, Kara Capaldo, Jill Winston, Matt Rohan and Mackenzie DeCicco Caborn (plus Cori Jade in her first public appearance!). We brought in almost $3,000. Photos of the day can be enjoyed here. It was a blast, so why not join us next year?!
From the Archives / Nostalgia
-- Jon Winston --
From the Sunrise Rotary Department of Nostalgia comes a blast from the past. Remember the deep, dark days of COVID oh so long ago in 2020? Remember how we had to rejigger our annual bike ride renaming it from Jon & Ken’s Most Excellent Adventure 3-day ride to the One Day Wonder that year because traveling on the road as a group was a no-go? Remember how on the eve of the carefully replanned local ride the winds shifted blowing the choking smoke of the CZU fires down our way making riding our carefully re-planned one day route a no-go? Remember how we would not be deterred? Remember how the creative bike ride committee pivoted one more time and created the DIY Sunrise Rotary Ride Scavenger Hunt? Well, that’s how it went down and despite all the obstacles nature could throw at us, the re-re-re-invented ride went off with great success.
You are invited to relive the day, the joy and the resilience of Sunrise Rotary through this zoom video of the grand post-ride party hosted like no other could by the late and sorely missed Rod Caborn.

World's largest (or smallest) gathering...
-- Tom Hart --
The world's largest gathering of skiing and snowboarding Santa Cruz Sunrisers was a huge success. Thanks for all who joined. Places available for next year (I almost want to go...).
