Aah, finally, Spring! The season that brings with it the usual clustering of religious and cultural observances. You have Ramadan, Easter, Holi, spring break, Spring Equinox, March Madness, a series of eclipses and, that financially-based U.S. staple, Tax Day. And, for many, it is their favorite time of year. Me? I get allergies so ah..choo!
The Regional Director, Central California for Junior Achievement of Northern California will be our speaker. Junior Achievement of Northern California is a nonprofit that inspires and prepares young people for success.
Come and hear the CEO & Founder of Lookout speak about the journey to bring local news to all of us. Lookout Local Inc., is a public benefit corporation whose fundamental mission is to serve its communities with a new and higher standard of news, information and community engagement. John Flaniken and Mark Boynton just came back from Guatemala and gave us an update.... As they stated, these trips build a lot of camaraderie and also are fulfilling - so helpful to the locals there. Great photos from them about what they did - providing safe drinking water.

Heidi Luckenbach, Water Director for the City of Santa Cruz, gave us a report on securing our water future. She talked to us about how Santa Cruz' water demands are increasing, the infrastructure is getting out dated and much more. It's all real, folks.
Santa Cruz Symphony's Dr. Don Adkins, a professional musician, teacher and orchestra conductor spoke to the club about making music. if you are a music afficiniado, this is a must-watch!
Santa Cruz Sunrise Rotary hosted the annual area-level Rotary high school speech contest on February 28th. First place went to Haviva Zenack from Pacific Collegiate School. Haviva will now advance to the regional contest where she will have the opportunity to compete against other students who placed first speech contests within their Rotary areas. This speech contest encourages students to develop the important skill of speaking effectively before a group. It also underscores the importance of service to others - a central tenet of all Rotary clubs.
I hope people are not like me, waiting for the last minute to do taxes. Seems appropriate to share this quote, especially this year-

Members Corner
Rachelle Lopp from the Los Gatos Rotary Club reached out and provided this info about their Great Race on Sunday April 14th. It is a 4-mile certified race for serious runners, but also a scenic race for walkers or casual runners. There's also a 1-mile kids fun run with the San Jose Giants mascot there to cheer them on, complete with a jumpy house and waffle truck. Sounds like fun.

From our Satellite Club president:
On March 17, the Satellite Club participated in a Save Our Shores beach cleanup at Capitola Beach (special shout-out to Randall, who also attended and ably represented us old farts). Pictures below, including the post work celebration.
The Satellite Club has also created a new Instagram account that all should follow (if you cannot figure it out, ask a young person). The handle is @santacruzyoungrotary This account is where you can get updates on meeting locations and more. <I'll also try and post them here, if I can>
