Jul 25:Fred Keely
Fred Keely, Mayor of Santa Cruz, will join us to update the club on the state of the city. Lots going on so this should be informational. Fred Keeley has been a resident of the city for over 40 years and served on the state assembly from 1998 to 2002 and was speaker pro tempore. He has been a Santa Cruz County supervisor and county treasurer. He has taught at the Panetta Institute, at Santa Clara University and at San Jose State University. He is a co-founder of Housing Santa Cruz County, has served on the board of the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary and much more.
Aug 1:Doug Erickson
Doug Erickson is the Executive Director of Santa Cruz Works and the founder of the Santa Cruz New Tech MeetUp. He has 30 years of executive level positions in companies such as Live Picture, WebEx, Cisco, SugarCRM, and Nanigans. He is also the co-founder of CruzHacks (HackUCSC) one of the largest hackathons in California.
New President Ari started off her year in style. As she said a few times, things will be different. The "Lets get it started" song certainly woke us all up and set the tone. Ari did an entertaining silver badge bio and reacquainted us all to who she is. Its definitely worth checking out.
Jun 13:Dave Mello / Ryla
RYLA Campers - Scarlet Rider, Emi, Maya Weinberg, Alex Lee Hazel Campbell, Cavanaugh Larson & Sam Ruttenber joined Dave Mello and gave us a great update on their experience, what they learned and so much more. Amazing to see how much of an impact a short trip makes in the lives of these young people!

Shakespeare Santa Cruz - Rotary Night. Flyer has details. People can choose between the 2pm matinee of The Importance of being Earnest or the 8pm evening performance of Hamlet, w/ picnic from 5:00-6:45pm. (Hope people bought their tickets; this is a district-wide event).

Sad News: Tammy Garcia
Jul 14 Sentinel’s Obituary Notices reported the that Tammy Lyn Garcia of Sunrise Rotary died on June 24th. Cause of death was cancer. No formal service will be held. In lieu of flowers a donation to Hospice or a charity of your choice is preferred.

Firecracker: Jul 4
Firecracker 10k/5K/Kid’s 1K on the 4th was a success!! As Dieter reported, we had about 625 runners, a 5% increase from last year. Dieter got many positive comments from runners who emailed him to say how they enjoy this run and how much fun it was. The weather was nice and we were able to get the volunteers to pull it off (could have used more, is what I heard). We won't know the totals are until all bills have been paid and we have received all the pledges that have been made.
Congrats to Dieter and the whole group for pulling off this amazing event.
Pedal the Pacific - Jul 9 and 10
12 college girls are doing a fundraising ride from Seattle to San Diego to raise awareness for sex trafficking. They showed up in Santa Cruz on July 9, and were escorted by our Rotary bike riders from Wilder Ranch back to 41st Ave for a light lunch. All of the riders then rode back to Corralitos. The following night, John and Megan Martinelli generously opened their home to host supporters of Pedal the Pacific. A good time was had by all who attended both events. This was our 5th year hosting these riders as they pass through Santa Cruz, spearheaded by Brent Dunton and team.
Rotary leadership Transitions
On Saturday, July 13, there was a much deserved District Farewell for our District Governor, Hung Wei. She has been instrumental in shepherding our district to an amazing year of achievements and we thank her for her service.
On the same day, Sunrise Rotary members came together for a fun afternoon and the debunking of immediate past president Penni Bengtson at the lovely estate of Jim and Donna Felich. That was a ton of fun and, even though she came prepared, Penni was caught by surprise when she got a unexpected cold shower!.
That Saturday, Jul 13, was busy! On that same day, Sunrise Rotary members helped with the Shared Adventures Day on the Beach, where Differently Abled people were assisted into the ocean, or just have a beach play day. Volunteers assisted as kayak paddlers, beach chair drivers, ocean activity - land/beach assistants, construction, set up, take down, trash clean up
and registration. Huge shoutout to Lisa Krigsman for organizing.
Bike Ride: Sep 26-28
On the heels of the successful Firecracker, activity for our annual Bike Ride (Sept 26-28) is ramping up. The organizing group held a well attended kick-off / meet and greet party at the Spokesman bike shop on July 16th. So far, there are 95 excited riders and crew signed up who’ve already begun their training and fundraising. And, there’s still room for a few more riders! I'm told that this 27th anniversary ride is going to be epic with primary beneficiary Treasure Cove at Jade Street Park and secondary beneficiaries Boys and Girls Club, Teen Kitchen Project and Skills of Life Café. Lots going on with the Club. I highly recommend people make it a habit of either checking the calendar online or subscribing and adding it to their own calendar on their smartphone. Sigfrid is doing an awesome job of keeping it updated. The bad news of doing this is that you will no longer have the excuse of "Oh, I missed the event because no one told me about it...". However, I am confident in people's ability to make up an excuse for missing an event- where there is a will, there is a way!
