Dec 5:Karen Kroslowitz, Ukranian Natl Women's League of America
The Ukrainian National Women's League of America (UNWLA) is a charitable and cultural organization that unites women of Ukrainian descent and affiliation.
Karen talked to our group about the work that they are doing to educate and motivate children, families, and community members of all ages about cooking and eating a healthy, whole foods diet, and enjoying regular exercise in order to maximize optimal health and minimize disease. It was also at this meeting that they announced the District-Governor Elect for 2027-2028 (read more below to see why this is relevant to our club)
At this same meeting, we also received a brief update from Harbir Bhatia of Sunnyvale Rotary and Ruslan Alikperov of Ukraine Rotary regarding events in Ukraine and in particular a renewed appeal for funds to provide generators, stoves and other critical supplies as the winter approaches. Donations can be made online at the Ukraine relief page set up by our District.
Nov 14:Gary Griggs on California's history of natural disasters
Gary Griggs has been a UCSC professor for 56 years and his talk about the natural disasters in California, and more so in Santa Cruz, was fascinating. He did tell us that we all don't need to move. Nov 7:John Flaniken and Rick Hofstetter, Rotary Foundation Kick-Off
John and Rick kicked off another year for the Rotary Foundation. For those who missed it, check out this video. Pretty powerful stuff.

Rotary Foundation - Time to make your donation
There is a pretty cool webpage that Jon Winston has set up for people to make their annual donation to the Rotary Foundation. It is as simple as it gets. Over its lifetime, the Rotary Foundation (the charitable arm of Rotary International) has given over $4 billion dollars to support life-changing and sustainable projects throughout the world. TRF, as we affectionally call it, works hand in hand with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, UNICEF, The Red Cross and numerous other NGOs and partners directly with the World Health Organization, the CDC, and the United Nations. It operates in over 200 countries. The Association of Fundraising Professionals voted it the number one Foundation in the world!
2027-28 District Governor Elect: John Flaniken
Past President, and Sunrise Rotarian extraordinaire, John Flaniken was announced as the District Governor elect for District 5170. He will be first DG from our club. I had a chance to chat with John after the meeting and he is so stoked about this opportunity. It brings visibility to our club, and allows him and us to play at a different level. To do more good. 2027 is a ways away so this is a pretty serious commitment and congrats to John for this honor and thanks to John for stepping up. The Rotary kool-aid is strong with this one!

Social Committee Mixer
The Social Committee hosted a mixer at Sevy’s Bar and Kitchen (Seacliff Inn) on Monday, Nov 18, with more than a dozen Sunrisers in attendance. We even had a prospective member attend. These socials are a great way to introduce prospective members to the club in a more relaxed environment so keep that in mind for upcoming dates.
New Rotary Swag Hats
At the Nov 21st meeting Lisa Krigsman, Tony Giannotti and Tom Hart handed out the Club’s new swag hats to Red Badge Members - Cathleen Eckhardt, DeAndre James and Sigfrid Gorman. More hats will be distributed to Red Badgers as they attend meetings. A survey will be distributed to club members to determine how many more hats to order.

Community Service: Adopt a Family
Santa Cruz Sunrise Rotary has adopted a family. Please look at their wishlist and bring your wrapped and tagged gifts no later than the December 5th meeting. There are still some things that are needed so anything will help!
Annual Warm Coat Drive
Janet Russell is doing her annual warm coat drive one last time. Her 5th and final warm coat drive for our homeless neighbors, ends Dec. 4th. Please bring your new or gently used coats and jackets to her offices at David Lyng, 1041 41st (with reception or in the box upstairs near her office). Only coats, windbreakers or vests, for all ages, please.
Rod Caborn GoFundMe
As many know, Rod Caborn, one of our club leaders and a Past President, received a devastating diagnosis of ALS this past summer. During his 20+ years as a Rotarian, Rod has unleashed his passion for making the world a better place in so many ways, by volunteering his unequaled skills as an emcee and fundraiser, creating and leading Rotary events and supercharging them to raise hundreds of thousands of dollars for charitable causes in our local community and for Rotary projects around the world.
Now, Rod needs our help. We are raising funds to help him with the tremendous expense associated with navigating ALS. Please give if you can at the GoFund Me page set up to collect funds to help defray some of the huge impending expenses associated with providing mobility support for Rod.
