Pretty soon, yours truly will be stepping down as newsletter editor, and no, it's not because I said something controversial that got me into trouble with the Rotary gods (although word on the street is that this is still under investigation).
Job requirements: can type, has a pulse....
Perks: mild fame, power to publish embarrassing photos, my eternal gratitude.

 SHORT Program:  Brief update from a past beneficiary: Food What?!
MAIN Program: Most Santa Cruz locals think they know Grey Bears, the venerable nonprofit founded 53 years ago by a UCSC graduate and her boyfriend with the spark of an idea to put unharvested produce to use nourishing neighborhood seniors. Get ready to have your minds blown and your hearts inspired by the big impact this homespun organization makes on improving food security and other health determinants among Santa Cruz County’s most vulnerable populations, including even bigger plans for the future.

MAIN: David Smith Athlete/Adventure
We will hear from David Miln Smith, an athletic adventurer, a Hall of Fame swimmer, and an author. The first person to swim from Africa to Europe, his achievement was featured by Life magazine and later earned him the May 1970 Sports Illustrated cover: "Super Hippie." A pioneer of self-competition, he led 54 four-day wilderness expeditions for patients with schizophrenia, created the events for NBC SportsWorld's Survival of the Fittest, directed Le Tour de sanFRANCEcisco for 10,000 cyclists, and appeared on national television from Dick Cavett to Johnny Carson. Born in San Francisco and a Santa Cruz resident for 35 years, his message is simple: "Longevity isn't about avoiding decline. It's about repeatedly giving the brain and body meaningful challenge, novelty, and play so they never forget how to adapt."

District Collaborative Impact Summit - Saturday September 19 from 9 - 5 - Let's have a great showing at the District Collaborative Impact Summit   There is a great program and our club is sponsoring Jacob's Heart to table.  We are collecting old prescription glasses at the next 2 club meetings (Sept 10 and 17) to give to a club at the summit who will then donate to those in need! Register here for Summit.
 
Little Library Refresh during Rotary Basic Education + Literacy Month. Do you have a little library in your neighborhood that needs more books or do you have a library that has had the same 15- 20 books? At our September 24th meeting, pls take a box of books away to restock your little library, or bring in a box of books to swap out the ones you have. If your neighborhood is in need of a little library also let know.  Sign up to take/swap/request a little library here.
 
Second Harvest Gleaning - Final Summer Glean with the Satellite Club! - Saturday September 26 from 9 - 12.  Meet Satellite members and harvest produce for community members in needs.  You can also sign up for a Tues or Thurs shift through September.  Sign up here for any of the dates.
