The new District Governor is making her rounds and will be visiting our club this coming week. Mary Alsip, our VP, asked I put this into the Reveille - "Due to the fact that we are going to be hosting our district governor this Thursday, and it looks like I will be leading the meeting again, would you please be so kind as to find your Rotary best and wear it to the meeting in honor of our new district governor Jill Duerig. It will be so cool if people found old Rotary shirts or bike ride shirts or Warriors shirts anything with the Rotary emblems plastered all over them… Dig through your closet!." So, people, show up in your finest Rotary regalia (IMHO, I think she will be fine if it is your old tattered regalia....)

Most successful scientists are specialists delving deeply into a particular area of research, but that doesn't mean they aren't interested in other disciplines. J. Xavier Prochaska, for example, is a distinguished professor of astronomy and astrophysics at UC Santa Cruz who has won acclaim for his groundbreaking research in astrophysics, but he has also maintained an interest in oceanography since he was an undergraduate. He will be talking to us about drones and oceanography. Honestly, that sounds fascinating.
Ben talked to us about Free Guitars for Kids (FG4K) and helping children experience the joys and benefits of owning a musical instrument. FG4K has a mission to transform the lives of kids in underserved communities through the gift of a guitar.

Chris is the new director for the Santa Cruz Public Library and Sarah is the ED for the friends of the santa cruz public library. They talked to us about the NY Times vs. Washington Post vs. local media. OK... no, they did not. They talked to us about the great things happening at the Santa Cruz Public Libraries (d'oh).

The Sunrise Rotary Ride (aka, Jon and Ken’s Most Excellent Adventure) is exactly one month away and we can’t wait to get back on the road again! There are still a few rider spots open so it’s not too late to join in the fun. If you’re not familiar with the ride, visit the ride website to learn all about it. The is our 27th annual ride and It will be epic! (They all have been epic but this will be epic'er.... ummm....)
The proceeds of this year's ride will support the construction of Treasure Cove, the new universally accessible playground at Capitola’s Jade Street Park.
If pedaling 200 miles for a great cause is not your cup ‘o tea, please consider becoming a sponsor or supporting one of our stouthearted riders or crew members with a contribution to their fundraising effort. Pitching in is simple, fast and oh so rewarding! Riders commit to raising a minimum of $1000 each so why not help them hit their goal while doing something awesome for the kids in Santa Cruz.

Our club inducted a new Red Badge and a newly minted Blue Badge this past month.
Matt Bergdahl is our newest Red Badge member. Matt is Teen Kitchen’s Asst Development Director. Prior to joining Teen Kitchen, Matt was with Island Stone. He lives in Santa Cruz, his partner is Adrian White and his interests include surfing, reading, hiking and community. Please welcome Matt as Sunrise’s newest member.
And... drum roll..... Eileen Beaudry finally got her Blue Badge (which was a huge surprise for me since I thought she had gotten it a while back, like before me even... Things you find out!)
Rotary Night at Shakespeare
Our club hosted a district-wide event at Shakespeare Santa Cruz. It was a pretty good turnout, with Rotarians from all over the district showing up. Many saw the afternoon play, and many saw the evening play - so it was perfect. If you have yet to experience a performance at this wonderul location, I highly recommend it. Charles Pasternak, the artistic director of the play, who was our speaker in June, personally joined us at the Grove to say a quick thank you for supporting the production.
Social at Aptos Vineyard, Aug 8
A good crowd showed up to the Aptos Vineyard tasting room. Rob Morse was guest pouring and there were appetizers to be had. It was a good time.
Satellite Club News
The Satellite clubs last meeting was a social at Abbott Square, which many new perspective members attended. The meeting prior they met at Balefire Brewing where Tanner Gilbert gave his professional bio about his journey from fish biology to engineering to the startup world.

Club Board Meetings - moving to Tuesdays starting in September
Starting in September, the club board meetings will move from the 4th Friday mornings to the 4th Tuesday at 4pm and relocate to Mackenzie Bar & Grill at Pasatiempo. There will likely be an all-club social starting at 5:30p, open to all.
Am looking to make some changes... so be on the lookout for that. I also think I may, finally, get the google group going for folks to share emails about happenings, ask questions, give way stuff and more. Methinks its time to do that (email me with thoughts if you have them).
