It is Cinco De Mayo!! Hope you all had fun at the Ferrante's party.
May 5, 2024 | Next Issue May 19
<Issue 1 is around 1st Sunday of the Month; Issue 2 on the 3rd Sunday. 2 issues a month>

The month of May is the pleasant time; its face is beautiful; the blackbird sings his full song, the living wood is his holding, the cuckoos are singing and ever singing; there is a welcome before the brightness of the summer.

Looking Ahead | Upcoming Meetings
May 9: Ken Whiting
Come and listen to Ken Whiting give his Silver Bio. Ken has been a Rotarian, and part of this club, since 1988 (for people who can count, that would be 36 years!). Always interesting to hear bios from long-serving members., especially about how things were in the dark times (joke, that's a joke).

May 16: Steve Bennett
Steve currently works for the Santa Cruz Sentinel - which he will talk about; but as you’ll hear from his talk, he’s had a bunch of different jobs with a number of newspapers both here in California but also up in Oregon and Idaho. He also did a stint with Second Harvest Food Bank, right here in Santa Cruz. Steve is also the current president of the Freedom Rotary Club.

April 25: Jonathan Hicken
Jonathan Hicken has been the executive director for the Seymour Marine Discovery Center, since 2021. He talked to us about a community-supported marine science education center of UCSC. Interestingly, almost a 100% of our members in attendance had visited that center (which is cool, right?)

May 2: Nathan Nguyen
Nathan Nguyen has been the City of Santa Cruz’s public works director for the last 15 months. He gave us an update on West Cliff Drive and much more.

Miracle on Jewell Street: Santa Cruz Rotary Club
The Santa Cruz Rotary Club (yes, that one) is holding their Miracle on Jewell Street event at the Santa Cruz Elks Lodge on Sat, May 11; 5:30pm. As they say, while May typically brings to mind springtime, blossoming flowers, and beach outings, they're infusing the season with a dose of holiday spirit and holding a fun, festive, Christmas-inspired event. Funds raised will go towards their corpus and therefore support their B&G grant effort - positively impacting local nonprofits in Santa Cruz County (they provided that language, I just publish it).
You can learn more about the event at: https://www.santacruzrotary.com/annual-fundraiser.html

Flaniken completes 9 month Rotary Course!
John Flaniken completed the nine month Rotary Leadership course this March. He said it was a very difficult and rewarding class. At the Rotary District Conference 2024,  held at the iconic Hayes Mansion, he received a Plaque in recognition for his effort and this prestigious accomplishment. Go, John!

Mary provided this great pic of John and his cheesy grin...

And, that's not all. John also led a session at the District Conference on International Service Projects (he’s serving the District this years as International Service Chair and Lieutenant Governor for Special Projects).   And, most importantly, John received a very special award at the District Conference for Exemplary Service to Rotary. Here is a picture of John with District Governor Hung Wei and Past RI President Gary Huang.
