Welcome Guests
We appreciate having guests join us early on Thursday morning's and appreciate their interest in what we do and who we are even at that early hour. This week we were joined by Jamey King, Brian King, Eric Brown, and Noah Brown.
Guest Speakers - MTNS2SEA
We had the pleasure of welcoming Brian and Jamie King, co-founders of MTNS2SEA, join us this week and describe the program they run.
Brian describes MTNS2SEA as a youth empowerment program focused on social emotional support for youth using the outdoors as a vehicle to promote change and make them better people. The program is designed for building confidence, overcoming challenges, setting personal goals, and nurturing healthy relationships. It's a program that uses the outdoors to develop life skills as opposed to training for outdoor skills. The most important thing they do is create a loving and trusting relationship with the youth so they leave the program with a strong mentor in their life.
The program is supported by the Santa Cruz County Office of Education and Santa Cruz City Schools to provide the program during the school day.
More than a few club members and friends of the club participated in this year's Walk a Mile in Her Shoes campaign, an annual event to bring awareness to issue of domestic violence. Led by Santa Cruz Bank, representatives from businesses across the county joined together. Funds raised go to Monarch Services. Can you find the following in the image above? A Banner Year for Community Service
Over the past year, the club's community service committee met 6 times and the club participated in over 16 events, assisting local non-profits and those they serve with over 430 hours of community service. These organizations included the Homeless Garden Project, Community Bridges Nueva Vista Community Center, Housing Matters, Habitat for Humanity, Second Harvest, Girls Inc., Coastal Watershed Council, Save our Shores, the Special Olympics, Girls Inc., Big Brothers Big Sisters, Run for Reading, SC Volunteers Center, and the Salvation Army. Importantly, we continue to build relationships with a range of organizations from those we already know to those who are new to the Club.
We will have a lighter schedule of opportunities through the summer and up to the Bike Ride but there are great plans for this next year in the works. At last Friday night's meeting the board approved our new Satellite Club. President Jerry spoke briefly at the last meeting, keep your eyes open for more information.
Our last community service project of the year was at the Homeless Garden Project Sustain Dinner fundraiser - we were 7 of 60 volunteers.
