Last Week Today

  • This week’s speaker was the downtown club’s own Traci Bliss who presented the very interesting history of preservation at Big Basin State Park. Traci introduced us to her historical work - Big Basin Redwood Forest: California’s Oldest State Park - with interesting facts on the people and politics of a century ago that worked to protect our local treasure.  Her story included the supportive preservation efforts of the Santa Cruz Rotary Club and how they solicited a tour by Rotary International including founder Paul Harris. As part of their centennial celebration, the Santa Cruz Club has asked for Sunrise’s help with their reenactment of that historic visit this October. More to follow.
  • See Savannah Lovelace's opinion article for Pedal the Pacific in Lookout Santa Cruz. Nice recognition for Brent and Shiela Dunton and the Santa Cruz Sunrise Rotary Riders.
  • The first meeting of the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion committee was held Thursday night. Rotary International has made DEI a priority. Click here to read and learn more about Rotary's commitment to DEI.
  • Next Week, Tara Leonard will join us to talk about Santa Cruz County's Tobacco Control Program.

Prior to each show, we will have a BYO picnic dinner in the Glen. Bob and Patrice Keet will bring some wine to share, but everyone is welcome to bring a beverage for themselves or to share. We will work on reserving picnic tables near each other in the Glen.
