“The Save” is an ESPN Documentary that follows Gina Castañeda, a juvenile probation officer in Watsonville, CA. who uses soccer for social change in a community struggling with gang violence and poverty. Soccer saved her life, and now she is giving back what was given to her. Gina is only one of six women from around the world featured in an ESPN documentary series that aired during the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup. This film intertwines Gina’s past and present to create a rich and compelling narrative of one woman struggling to literally save lives with soccer. From working on her juvenile case-load to coaching the Aztecas in a championship match, this documentary shows how one woman really can make a difference.
Recent Meetings
We did not have a meeting on Dec 26, it was dark. And, on Jan 2, we had Alexi Sevastopoulos from Santa Cruz Ventures talk to us about the work they are doing for the early stage investment fund. They are backing early stage, high growth technology companies founded in and around Santa Cruz. It was fascinating, but then again, that is my world. If people are interested in investing, you can contact Alexi - they are looking for more $$.

Adopt-A-Family

Every year the Volunteer Center of Santa Cruz County, along with the help of over 1,000 donors, adopters, volunteers, sponsors, and partners, creates holiday magic for thousands of local families, teens, and seniors. This year the AAF program delivered over 2,000 gifts and distributed $10,000 in grocery gift cards, ensuring families could enjoy warm holiday meals and essentials this holiday season. Santa Cruz Sunrise Rotary adopted 1 of the 550 families. Our family covered a multi-generational household of 7 who are hard working farmers, still trying to recover from being heavily impacted by the CZU fires and storms. A large heartfelt thank you to all who stepped up and donated time and money to deliver items to the Club (and Lisa's home in the 11th hour).
