Gary Griggs is Distinguished Professor of Earth and Planetary Sciences at the University of California Santa Cruz. Known for his expertise in coastal geology and oceanography, Gary writes a popular bi-weekly newspaper column, Our Ocean Backyard, and is a frequent contact for news and media on questions of climate change, sea-level rise, and coastal erosion. Something to Lighten Your Day Deep Thoughts By President Ari:
The Satellite club hosted a fun, and well attended, Candy Cornhole Social on 10/29. It lived up to its billing and was a “corny” event filled with corny costumes, cornbread, and chili and corn hole. The event was fun and everyone had a good time.

Last week a group of Sunrise Rotarians went to Tecate Mexico and built a little house in one day! Each person chipped in $1000 for house materials and $700 for lodging. They flew to flew to San Diego, were picked up by two vans and crossed the border at Tecate, Mexico. It was a very easy border crossing and it was interesting to see the border wall.
The group woke up early Friday morning, made their own bagged sandwiches and headed out into the Sonoran desert where there was not a tree to be seen in any direction. Checking the Weather App was not reassuring. The Heat was ON!
The latrine and the foundation had been constructed prior to their arrival. The group started out by pounding the framing. They then put up the rafters, the end walls, moved onto the sheet rock, the electricity, the windows and the doors. They also painted the 16 large siding pieces - that was a lot of paint.
The group worked all day with an hour break for lunch. They built the house for Guadalupe Lopez, her husband and three children. Guadalupe helped them all day long. The building started as a shack about 9 x 9 with only one bed and, at the end, looked like house, painted a beautiful Rotary blue.
Heidi Boynton led the group and was "terribly organized" - I believe that is good! The construction manager, Hector, was described as being a a stunning work in motion; he never stopped working, never raised a voice, kept everyone in line, and helped them with the dozens of power tools.
At the end of the day, the group blessed the house and handed the keys to Guadalupe. She slept there that night. Her husband will return to a brand new, beautiful home.
Pretty amazing what a tiny group of tired, filthy, covered in paint, but still smiling Rotarians can accomplish!

Each day in Tecate, we shared reflections of the day's events, a practice that brought into focus our impact on the work in which we participated.

This was meaningful as it changed the lives of a family.
Rotarians are incredibly hard workers, possessed of a "can do" and "Let's get this done!" attitude.
Together, we can accomplish amazing things. We are so fortunate to be a part of this remarkable group of people. We all developed a much richer appreciation for each other.
Service work touches you deep in your soul! It is fun to meet fellow Rotarians on our travels.
I would love to do more of this!
Santa Cruz Sunrise Rotary has adopted a family. Please look at their wishlist and bring your wrapped and tagged gifts no later than the December 5th meeting.
Annual Warm Coat Drive
Janet Russell is doing her annual warm coat drive one last time. Her 5th and final warm coat drive for our homeless neighbors, ends Dec. 4th. Please bring your new or gently used coats and jackets to her offices at David Lyng, 1041 41st (with reception or in the box upstairs near her office). Only coats, windbreakers or vests, for all ages, please.
