Community Service
On Saturday, Oct 14, Sunrise members met at the Housing Matters campus and helped assemble around 400 hygiene kits (way to go, people!).
We have another opportunity on Saturday, Oct 28 between 8 and noon -->. Community Food Distribution Second Harvest, 800 Ohlone Pkwy, Watsonville, CA 95076, for warehouse food sorts and food distributions, children ages 13+ may volunteer; and children from ages 10-12 may be approved to volunteer with parent/guardian/chaperone present.
We got a positive update from Darlene that she is getting great care at Stanford, has been released from the hospital and is looking forward to getting back in the saddle soon. She is fighting blood cancer and has had many rounds of chemo.
Maui Fire Relief Effort Update
Our generous club members and friends have raised an impressive $8,700 for the relief efforts in Lahaina. We were fortunate to make a connection with a Rotarian in the Lahaina Sunset club, Joanne Laird, who has enabled us to send our support directly to Maui Rotarians so it could immediately be put to work. As previously reported, the first tranche of $3,277 was used to purchase supplies (“Rotarian at work” vest, hats and name badges as all of their supplies were lost in the fire) for the 3 Lahaina Rotary Clubs so they could be recognized as Rotarians as they are out in the community working to recover and rebuild. We’re working with Joanne to determine how the final funds will be spent, but most likely it will be for food support for the more than 2000 people still being temporarily housed in hotels and shelters.
Here’s a brief note from Joanne describing the situation on the ground in Lahaina: "Thank you for asking — things on Maui are in a constant state of flux. Still over 2000 fire survivors living in the hotels since there is not enough housing. FEMA the Red Cross and so many agencies are still working with Fire Survivors. All people in the hotels are receiving boxed meals but hot meals are most appreciated. Nalus and other restaurants are providing some hot meals. Kids are returning to the west side schools starting Monday. But it is known that 900 of the original 3000 students have moved to live with families around the island and they won’t be returning to the West Side Schools. One elementary school burned to the ground and those students will be attending “tent-classrooms” on the site of the remaining elementary school. It is unknown how many students will return to the West Maui schools. And the island is attempting to encourage tourism in order for our economy to bounce back. That is just the tip of the iceberg. So many moving parts to this situation……appreciate all that your club has done for us!”

Rotarian of the Month
Meghan Morse was recognized for all her work in getting the satellite club going. We really appreciate her enthusiasm.
