The origins of the Santa Cruz High School Track and Field Project project began 11 years ago when two club members, Ken Whiting and Jon Sisk got together and decided to start a 3 day charity bike ride fundraising event to raise money for youth athletics in Santa Cruz.  At that time they had no idea what the funds would be used for, only that they would commit to 10 years, and donate the funds to a worthy cause at that time.

The first year of "Jon and Ken's Most Excellent Adventure" as the ride was called, consisted of about 10 riders and raised a few thousand dollars; however by year 10 there were nearly 80 riders participating and to date the event has raised close to half a million dollars!

When it came time for the Rotary Club of Santa Cruz Sunrise to find a project that would support youth athletics and that was in desperate need of help the Santa Cruz High Track and Field was an easy choice.  As it currently sits the dirt track is too narrow and rutted for the landmark high school to have a home track meet, and the field itself quickly turns into a muddy mess after minimal use.

So it was settled, and with a large commitment from the school board, the Santa Cruz Soccer Club, and other philanthropic groups and individuals, we are well on our way to having the 2.4 million dollars that the project will require.  In addition all plans have been approved and were submitted for bidding, all the while the fundraising continues. In order to fill the gap we are reaching out to individuals, businesses, and organizations in the community and offering the opportunity to purchase a plaque for "The Wall of Fame" at the entrance to the stadium.  The wall itself was built in the 80's by the Rotary Club of Santa Cruz Sunrise and the Rotary Club of Santa Cruz; however over time its condition had deteriorated substantially.

As donations began to pour in it was determined that the plaques should be displayed on the wall in recognition of the donors and to motivate others to contribute, but first the wall had to be reconditioned.  Over several weekends volunteers from the Rotary Club of Santa Cruz Sunrise power washed, scraped, patched and painted the wall until it looked better than new.  The crew, lead by the club's president Keith Henderson and Community Service Committee Chair Jeff Talmadge, then mounted the first round of plaques to the wall.
