“Hearing Loss Challenges Worldwide,”Dr. Kamal Elliot, and Braden Baker
Dr. Kamal Elliot, Au.D. is an Audiologist who has owned/operated her private practice in Lancaster County since 2000. In the past 5 years, she has organized and participated in 15+ overseas relief projects to provide hearing aids to hearing-impaired people who live in poverty without access to care.
The World Health Organization describes untreated hearing loss as a disability with a global annual cost in excess of $750 billion. Untreated hearing loss is considered the #1 modifiable risk factor for dementia and Alzheimer's. Interventions, including hearing aids, can provide great benefit to people by restoring their connection to their loved ones, safeguarding themselves from accidents and falls, and eliminating barriers to life-sustaining wages. Nevertheless, both in the US and in the countries where we travel, hearing treatment is often an afterthought for health policymakers. For example, in the US Medicare does not provide any benefits for hearing treatments.
Dr. Elliot speaks about these issues, and highlights stories of patients - both locally and overseas - who provide her with motivation to continue combating the systemic challenges of treating hearing loss on a global scale. She has witnessed - time and again - patients who have gone on to use their hearing loss as a catalyst for positive change in the world. One such patient is Braden Baker.
Braden Baker is an advocate for hearing-impaired youth, and at 13 years old he's already been a guest on the Ellen DeGeneres show and the focus of a 30-minute episode of Marvel Entertainment's "Hero Project" show on the Disney+ streaming service. In 2019, Marvel named Braden an official Marvel Superhero - named "Battlin' Braden" - for his advocacy and fundraising efforts. To date he has raised over $100,000 for this cause. Braden already has more public speaking experience than many adults, including a Ted-X Youth talk in Fort Worth and multiple corporate meetings in the hearing treatment industry.
Sarah Thibault reminded members to submit nominations for the RCL Community Service Award. Nominees should be at least 18 years old, and currently reside or work in Lancaster County. Kathy will be adding the nomination and criteria forms, along with a list of past recipients, to the RCL website. April 1st is the deadline for the nomination forms.

Rob Gallagher announced that the Rotary Rendezvous on March 25th will be a Rotary Means Business Networking and Membership Event, will be held at Debord/Snyder Funeral Home on Orange Street location, from 5:30 to 7:30 pm. Please register for this event.

Beth Trout reviewed the Club’s direction and future with the committee’s use of squad analysis, and read the club’s current mission statement . Presenting 4 Key Pillars of the Club:

Former RCL Melissa Otto has passed-away as a result of a motorcycle accident. She and her husband Jay were on the motorcycle when he lost control. Melissa had just turned 50 and was in our Club for a year.
