For the second consecutive week, Rotary Club of Lancaster will host a high-profile program. Our Club is hosting a first-ever Special Judicial Primary Election Forum this Wednesday, April 19. Lisa M. Driendl-Miller (left), Executive Director of the Lancaster Bar Association, and Judge Karen Maisano (right) will be the guest speakers.
You won't want to miss this newsworthy event covering local judicial nominees and the little-understood selection and nomination process. It has generated significant local interest. A number of community civic and judicial leaders will attend, as well as reporters from LNP l Lancaster Online and other news outlets.
Advance registration is required by Monday (April 17) so we can provide a head count to Hess's for the lunch. As mentioned in an email sent last week, members can invite up to 2 guests, but must accompany their guests into the meeting. The meeting agenda will follow our normal weekly timeline.
The innovative event was conceived by Past President Wally Otto and unanimously endorsed by our Board. Wally has spent weeks coordinating the forum and trying to line up the participants, motivated by his passion for Lancaster County and his concern for responsible local government and judiciary. He will serve as moderator.
Judicial candidates are typically little known to the local electorate and often get minimal scrutiny by the news media. As part of our civic commitment, RCL wanted to host the local primary candidates and give them a forum for sharing their qualifications and views. At the same time, RCL believed this would be an opportunity to shed some light on the nomination and selection process for judgeships that have 10-year terms – whether or not the nominee earned a qualified rating from the Bar Association.
The event has taken another newsworthy turn as some candidates for the May primary and the political party that nominated them have declined to participate. The Lancaster County Bar Association will attend and provide significant insights. This should be a very illuminating forum, and it's another example of our Club's community leadership.
Don’t miss this very important event.
Also be sure to note our upcoming schedule of exciting programs in the “Speakers” column below – and plan to attend!
Secretary Eric Eliot hit a homerun when he invited a speaker from the Federal Reserve Bank. Ryo Tashiro proved to be a big draw and didn't disappoint us. He had much to cover and his pace reflected that. To our amazement, Ryo was not speaking from notes. He would look down at the podium, but Eric said there was nothing on the podium, so apparently Ryo would only glance there as he led us through his rapid, wide-ranging presentation on the state of the local economy. Ryo didn't miss a beat. A snapshot synopsis of the highlights is shown below. He generously sent us a copy of his program at:
Meal prices are $18, an overdue increase, but will feature the choice of 2 entrees and their familiar quality and service. This past week they featured: pork BBQ sandwiches, salmon, butternut squash soup, garden salad, rice, green beans, fresh fruit, and an amazing assortment of pies.
Hess's has been our preferred caterer since May 2001. We have new agreements with Hess Catering and the Farm & Home center, our home since June 1970.

Give Prepaid Lunch Tickets to Prospective New Members
This is a great way to invite new members! Crystal has "prepaid" lunch tickets that you can purchase and give to prospective new members when you invite them to a meeting. This way you don't have to worry about paying for their meal when they come or, for that matter, even being present when they come. If you bought "prepaid" lunch tickets for $16, you will need to add $2 to the ticket since lunches are now $18.

You can help spread the word about WW5K!
We need you for Saturday, June 24 at our hugely important Wheels and Wings Festival and 5K (WW5K). Our largest fundraiser of the year is now a little over two months away, and it’s already clear it will be our biggest, best, and most heavily attended. We need more volunteers than ever to make this WW5K a success.
Our WW5K subcommittee has joined with the Communications Committee to begin to generate widespread interest and enthusiasm. They just printed 3,000 flyers for distribution at the primary local car shows and elsewhere. People are needed to help with those efforts. RCL has kicked off the promotion, publicity, and advertising campaigns in print, online and through social media.
In news that is sure to spike public interest, Jamie Alton recently announced that our Wheels and Wings Festival & 5K (WW5K) will feature WWII warbirds (vintage aircraft) from the Capital Wing of the Commemorative Air Force. Free rides will be available.
Chip Kirchner also recently announced that United Way has matched our increased commitment of $30,000 to the Summer Youth Partnership. Part of this commitment is to create a video of the Summer Youth Experience and will include video from the Wheels & Wings festival. Funded agencies are invited to ask their staff and youth who benefit from their services to walk the grounds to thank supporters. Read More at: https://www.lancasterrotary.org/transmitter/UW2023Support.pdf
There will be numerous opportunities for all RCL members to volunteer – including before the event. As mentioned in previous transmitters, Steve Stockwell, who heads up the car show registrations, would like to distribute the newly registration flyers to participants at selected car shows throughout Lancaster County and beyond in April, May, and early June. If you like going to car shows, or simply have some time to take a Saturday afternoon ride this spring, please consider volunteering to help spread the word about our own WW5K.
We now have a schedule of all the most important car shows in the area. Contact Steve or subcommittee co-chairs Amy Lewis or Jamie Dalton to join the effort. There are many other opportunities to help WW5K succeed. Future issues of the Transmitter will begin listing specific ways that Future issues of the Transmitter will begin listing specific ways that members can volunteer to support our big fundraiser.
REMINDER: Share Your Program Ideas! We welcome interesting speakers, and engaging programs.
Our Club is always looking for ideas to add to the list of potential programs. If you have any ideas for programs, please contact Christine Sable (sableccim@gmail.com) or another member of the Meeting Planning Committee or any Board member, who will pass them along. Both live and virtual (Zoom) speakers are welcome.
The programs the Lancaster Rotary Club offers are important for our club and, with your help and participation, have often been truly phenomenal.
