You won’t want to miss this next program featuring one of our most popular presenters, local architectural expert and columnist Gregg Scott. He will tell us about James Warner’s work, life, and the controversy that surrounded one of Lancaster’s most prolific and talented architects.
James H Warner (1865-1913) was born in London, England to a family familiar with architecture and engineering. At the age of 19, for reasons unknown, he came to the United States to start his professional career.
Following a brief business venture in Harrisburg, PA, he arrived in Lancaster at the age of 24, and, within four months, won the highly coveted commission to design Lancaster’s Central Market. Within the next three years Warner was chosen to design the Catherine Long Mansion (Hamilton Club), Millersville Library, Franklin & Marshall Gymnasium, St John’s Lutheran Church, Christ Lutheran Church, South Duke Street and South Mulberry Street Schools and major mansions for many of Lancaster’s wealthiest families – and all before the age of thirty! While greatly accomplished, Warner would soon encounter tragedy, losing his commission to build the Pennsylvania State Capitol before passing away at 40.
Gregory Scott will tell us about James Warner’s work, life, and the controversy that surrounded one of Lancaster’s most prolific and talented architects.
Gregory Scott, FAIA, is the senior partner at RLPS Architects. A Registered Architect in 22 states, he was recently elevated to the American Institute of Architect’s College of Fellows, the highest honor awarded to members who have made significant contributions to the profession.
Gregg graduated from Penn State and since 2002 has been writing a monthly architectural design column for LNP News.
His local involvement over the years has included past board positions at the Samaritan Counseling Center and the Pennsylvania College of Art & Design, as well as Lancaster City Council, serving as president from 1986 to 1988.
Gregg’s personal interests include architectural photography, writing, lecturing, biking, hiking and anything related to Maine’s Acadia National Park.

Reminder: Dues Invoices have been sent
The Dues Invoices included an increase to $101 quarterly, $202 semi-annually or $404 annually. They may be paid by credit card at meetings. Or they can be made payable and mailed to: Rotary Club of Lancaster; P.O. Box 1387, Lancaster, PA 17608. There are also options to pre-pay for lunch fees. They are for 13 weeks, 26 weeks, or 52 weeks at $16 per week. Any meeting paid and not attended will be donated to the Club. There will be no refunds for this service.
Thanks to all Rotarians who selected one or more children for the Secret Angel Project with Reynolds Middle School. Hopefully these 37 students will experience a special joy in their lives this year knowing that someone cares.

Another opportunity to serve this holiday season was with our annual Bell Ringing for the Salvation Army. Our ringing Rotarians were to be at the corner of the Central Market next to DipCo (The Dispensing Company).
Special thanks to the hardy and spirited members who signed up for both Friday, December 16th from 11 am to 3 pm and Saturday, December 17th from 10 am to 3 pm.

Joy: Ed Hauck reported that Ali Husaini, a senior from F&M College has been awarded a Global Grant from the District 7390 scholarship committeee to attend Newcastle University in the UK for the 2023/24 year as a grad student.
