“Darkness to Light: Empowering Survivors from Crisis to Confidence,”Kayla Schneider
Kayla is a young woman with endless drive and passion who has not let the darkness of childhood sexual abuse define her, but rather rebuilt herself as a beacon to empower other survivors to find light and hope. Her passion is exemplified in her leadership, extracurricular activities, her community service and her academics.
Over the past six years, Kayla has used her personal story to encourage others through keynote speeches. Her platform “Darkness to Light: Empowering Survivors from Crisis to Confidence” lets others know they are not alone. Kayla has used her position as Miss Keystone 2018 last year to share her story and life experiences.
Kayla was appointed to the Children’s Justice Act Task Force of the Pennsylvania Department of Human Services (DHS) where she offers her perspective as an adult survivor. Kayla is also active in various community fundraisers which bring awareness of child sexual abuse. Rotary Rendezvous
Kaitlyn Blosser announced that the August 14th “Rendezvous” will have Susan Schaffer, Outreach Coordinator of Team River Runner as a speaker.
Team River Runner believes that every wounded and disabled veteran deserves the opportunity to embrace new challenges, invoke leadership, serve the community, and promote camaraderie. Team River Runner provides an outlet to fulfill these beliefs – inviting wounded and disabled war veterans and their families to participate in adaptive paddling programs. Founded in 2004 at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, we now offer weekly paddling sessions in 70 locations across the nation. Team River Runner is more than an adaptive sports program. It’s a program that provides hope and healing to those who have risked so much, yet asked for so little. It’s an opportunity to enjoy nature and realize its social, physical, and emotional benefits, whether it’s tackling whitewater rapids or paddling on peaceful flat-water. It’s an environment that facilitates connection, allowing veterans to reunite with their families and forge relationships with those who have endured similar pain. Our veterans are on the river to recovery.
53 Year Ago…The “Rubber Chicken Revolt” August 17th, 1966
A sign of creeping inflation can be seen in the August 17th, 1966 Transmitter when it was announced that the Club dues were being upped from $50 to $60 per year. Appearing in the same issue was the comment that President Harry Gerlach was appointing a new committee whose function would be to improve the menu at Rotary luncheons; the first official indication of possible disenchantment with the current meeting facilities.
