Trust in American institutions has declined dramatically in the past 50 years. But no institutional decline is so worrisome for our democracy than the decline in trust in news. Ms Pavelko will identify some of the sources of this mistrust and describe some of the ways journalists in general and WITF in particular are addressing this vital issue.
Kathleen Pavelko has been President and CEO of WITF Public Media since October 1999.
During her time at WITF, Kathleen launched a capital campaign which raised $21 million to build the Public Media Center, which opened in April 2007. Two agreement to lease and share broadcast spectrum have brought more than $65 million in assets to WITF.
Kathleen launched WITF’s first daily interview program (Smart Talk) in 2008. Three multi-year, multi-partner multimedia collaborations are underway: Transforming Health (begun 2012), StateImpact PA (launched 2013) and Keystone Crossroads (from 2014). PA Post, a digital-first news initiative to deliver state policy and politics news statewide, launched in September 2018.
Since 2001, WITF’s journalism has been awarded 15 national Edward R. Murrow Awards and the duPont-Columbia Silver Baton for Multimedia Excellence.
Kathleen has also served as president of Prairie Public Broadcasting (1996-99), where she created North Dakota’s first statewide public radio network. She served in a variety of roles at Penn State Public Broadcasting, including as chief operating officer and as an assistant professor of communications teaching courses in broadcast/cable history and management. She was executive producer for public affairs for West Virginia Public Broadcasting and a freelance print and broadcast journalist working in Athens and London.
Ms. Pavelko earned a B.A. in ancient history and an M.A. in Journalism from Penn State, certificates in non-profit management from the U.C./Berkeley and the Harvard Business School, and was awarded an honorary doctorate by Elizabethtown College.
Kathleen has been a director of the Archaeological Institute of America, the Station Resource Group, America’s Public Television Stations, and Greater Public. She served on the board of the Harrisburg Regional Chamber of Commerce and currently serves on the Advisory Board of the Harrisburg Corps of the Salvation Army.
Kathleen is married to Eugene Borza, professor emeritus of ancient history at Penn State.

Rotary Refugee Center Committee
The Committee invites you to be a coach for our Club's Rotary Citizenship Program, which helps refugees and immigrants prepare to take the test to become a US citizen. Interestingly, a person must have lived m this country for five (5) years before she or he becomes a candidate to take this test. Each coaching session is one-on-one and lasts an hour. This is a partnership between IU13 Community Education, The Rotary Club of Lancaster and the Refugee Center & Community School at Reynolds.
Here's what you need to know:
Coach's training takes place in this room (Farm & Home Center) from 10:30 a.m. to noon on Wednesday, April 17th.
Coaches review flash cards of the 200 questions about the US Constitution and the like, some of which the candidate will be asked by a government official during the citizenship test .
Coaches also help the candidate practice his or her English for example, by asking the candidate to tell you about themselves
Coaching sessions occur with the refugees on six (6) consecutive Wednesdays:
April 24th, May 1st, 8th, 15th, 22nd and 29th.
Each coaching session runs from 6:30 to 7:30 pm. Each coach will do only one session a night.
The sessions will be held at the Lancaster Public Library on North Duke Street.
Seven Club members are needed for one-on-one coaching sessions each night, so over the six Wednesdays there are 42 one-on-one interview sessions that need coaches.
Rotary Refugee Center Committee members Kevin Allen and Jon Walker are the Project Leads. One of us will be there each night to help things run smoothly.
