Volume 115 | Issue 7            August 12, 2020

Welcome to another issue of our weekly bulletin! Find out who our upcoming speakers are, what we covered during the last weekly meeting, and learn more about our Member of the Week.
From McCaskey to F&M to Hollywood: The saga of Oscar-winning director Franklin Schaffner - Zoom Mtg
Acclaimed filmmaker Franklin Schaffner was known for many things: His Oscar-winning work on "Patton." The original "Planet of the Apes" movie. The creepy sci-fi thriller "The Boys from Brazil."

People who know a bit more could be aware of his Emmy-winning television works, such as "12 Angry Men." Or even his turn at Broadway.

Lancaster County locals, of course, might know he graduated from McCaskey High School and Franklin & Marshall College. (In fact, Lancaster Mayor Danene Sorace proclaimed Franklin Schaffner week to honor the centennial of his birth, with McCaskey and F&M both planning events that were later canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic.)

Jeremiah Miller has served for the last five years as the Coordinator of Alumni Affairs for the McCaskey Alumni Association, an organization that archives the history of the School District of Lancaster while uniting thousands of graduates in service to McCaskey High School, his Alma Mater.

He is a filmmaker, writer, and actor, having appeared at Lincoln Center and on “Law & Order,” among many show-business credits. With an academic focus on Communications, he attended Brooklyn College of the City University of New York and Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina.

In February of 2018, he organized Barney Ewell Week, a citywide celebration of the 100th Anniversary of Ewell’s birth. As part of the festivities, he wrote and directed “Breaking Through: The Barney Ewell Story,” a documentary recounting the innumerable barriers Ewell surmounted to become one of the country's all-time great athletes.

Today he will speak to us about another McCaskey Graduate, Oscar-winning director Franklin Schaffner

Joys & Concerns
Concern from Scott Wagner:  We extend our sympathies to Scott Wagner for the loss of his father on July 28.  Russel Wagner was 95 and was an infantryman in World War II and awarded the Purple Heart for wounds sustained at the battle of Anzio.  Scott’s father was a member of the Northeast Lancaster Rotary Club, with 16 years perfect attendance.  Our thoughts and prayers go out to Scott.

“Pappy” Hoover’s Passing
Longtime Lancaster Rotarian V. Nowell “Pappy” Hoover passed away on August 4th at the age of 93.  He would have been 94 years old on August 6, 2020.

Pappy was inducted into the Club on May 13, 1953 and maintained perfect attendance for all 67 years!  Any member who has maintained 100% attendance since induction is part of the Rotary Club of Lancaster’s “Honor Roll.”  The next closest member on the roll is at 47 years.

Help Keep the Club Calendar Updated

All Rotarians – especially committee chairs – are encouraged to help keep our new Club Calendar full and updated with the great things that our Club is doing in the community.  Please submit any items you would like added to Kathy by e-mailing her at RotaryClubofLancaster@gmail.com.  Examples include the schedule of McCaskey Mentoring Sessions, Committee Meetings, Power Packs or Salvation Army Bell Ringing. If it’s happening, let’s get it on the Calendar for all to see!  Your help will keep us all updated with what’s going on within the Club AND will showcase our very active Club to the Lancaster Community and to prospective members.  The Club Calendar is available at www.LancasterRotary.org
