Her social impact initiative, Communicating Beyond Borders, the relevance of Miss America and how the organization's mission ties into that of the Rotary
Growing up overseas, the daughter of a Marine and 4th generation missionary child from Kenya, Courtney discovered the power of a voice as a child living in Okinawa. Through her experiences on this Japanese island and interactions with family members from Ecuador and India, she realized that language is what brings us together, but when barriers like accents cause misunderstanding, it can tear us apart. Today, after traveling to over 20 countries on 5 continents, she uses her voice to make a difference in our world.
She graduated from Lampeter-Strasburg High School and recently received a Master of Science in Speech-Language Pathology with minors in Spanish and Cross-Cultural Communications from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She became a pioneer in the field of speech-language pathology by presenting her ground-breaking research at several conferences including the National American Speech and Hearing Conference in Boston, Massachusetts and is currently working on publishing her research in an international journal. Her goal as a licensed speech and language pathologist is to use her expertise in accent modification to empower others with tools to communicate effectively and advocate for themselves so they can reach their American Dream, no matter where they come from. She currently works as a full-time speech-language pathologist for the Eastern Lancaster County School District, empowering children through communication every day. She hopes to obtain a Doctorate of Philosophy in Speech-Language Pathology to specialize in communication for marginalized populations.
Courtney's social initiative is Communicating Beyond Borders: Impacting the World, One Voice at a Time. In her free time, Courtney volunteers as a communication specialist for refugee and immigrant families. Courtney tutors these families in English communication so they are better able to reach their American Dream. As Miss Lancaster County 2019, she will represent Lancaster at the Miss Pennsylvania Competition in York on June 15 and will continue to advocate for the marginalized served by Church World Service and the Children's Miracle Network. Wheels and Wings Festival & 5K One Month to Go And Counting!
Since 2006 our Club has teamed up with the United Way of Lancaster County to fund the Summer Youth Experience. This program, run by Lancaster nonprofits with grant funds we provide, gives more than 1,110 city youth fun things to do that develop leadership skills and help prevent the “summer slide” in school.
Two years ago, we launched the Wheels and Wings Festival & 5K as our Spring Fundraiser to support this important Club program. The event gives us the chance to involve the whole community in supporting Lancaster’s youth. The festival’s got planes, helicopters, cars, a fun run, food, live music, bounce houses. There’s something for everyone, and in two years we’ve raised more than $20,000. Wow!
The WW5K Committee asks every member to help in some way. You can:
Ask your business—or, for you retirees, former business— to sponsor the event.
Invite business colleagues to participate by forwarding the attached materials to them.

Rotary Youth Exchange - Looking for Host Families!
The Club is hosting a student for the 2019-20 school year; he is an outstanding 15-year-old young man from Mexico who will arrive in August and return home the following June.
This young man enjoys movies, video games, music, skateboarding, soccer, volleyball, tennis, Taekwondo, robotics and computers. He would also like to explore acting. He lives with his parents and older brother. He has studied English for 11 years and considers himself fairly fluent in English. He has no health concerns.
We MUST find three host families for this young man; each family will host for about three and a half months. He will attend McCaskey High School. If you or anyone you know outside of Rotary is interested in this extremely rewarding experience or would like more info, please contact the committee chairs, Lisa Lewis (daytonduo@aol.com) or Jenn DeWalt (jdewalt@murrayins.com).
Foundation Giving
This week and next, members can do Rotary Foundation "check-ups" in the back of the meeting room. This might be especially helpful if you happen to be close to the next level, and would like to reach that level by the end of this giving year, June 30. There is a matching program for new members, so that if you choose to contribute a certain amount, know that the amount would be doubled. A donation of $100 is doubled to $200, and so on. A $1,000 donation earns a member the Paul Harris Fellow designation.
The Rotary Foundation has until June 30 to reach their goal, so please consider a donation before then.

PP Tim Peters awarded The Community Service Award to Susan M. Paxton for her many years of service to the Boy’s and Girl’s Club.
Strawberry Auction
The Strawberry Auction will be in two weeks. Bring your wallet, we need bidders! There will be 24 participants and our goal is $50/child. That money goes to the children. In addition, the Club makes a $750 donation to 4H for the Max Smith Foundation.
