"Bob Frick, author & historian"
Dred Scott vs. Sandford, US Supreme Court
After 45 years, three as an elementary teacher and 42 as an administrator, Robert Frick was drawn into the new world of living history. A guide for Historic Downtown Lancaster, PA, Walking Tours, he began creating PowerPoints for a local group that offers seniors opportunities to attend educational seminars presented by accomplished people in Lancaster that volunteer their expertise for bi-annual, six-week seminars. Libraries, community groups, and retirement communities are among his venues.
The United States Supreme Court interprets the laws. Their rulings standing until the Constitution is amended or reinterpreted by a later Court. The author tells the story of six cases considered by many to be among the Court's most significant ones. These descriptions are simple stories about complex cases brought before the Court.From Marbury v. Madison (1803) to United States v. Nixon (1974), readers learn that the United States Supreme Court has the authority to rule a law unconstitutional; segregation, in itself, was not originally considered to constitute unlawful discrimination; segregation in public education based solely on race violates the equal protection clause of the Fourteenth Amendment; prayer and Bible reading as part of the public school day violate the religious freedom of students as provided by the First and Fourteenth Amendments; and a President may not withhold information by using executive privilege as a means to avoid judicial review.
Congratulation President Russ, the Board of Directors, and other team members on a fantastic community event. 215 members and their guests watched as Representative Lloyd Smucker and Dr. Robert Hollister, the respective Republican and Democrat candidates for Pennsylvania's 11th Congressional District, participated in a 70-minute question-and-answer forum. Past President Ben Bamford served as moderator.
The Farm & Home Center is in the process of selecting a preferred caterer. Also RCoL is negotiating for a flat fee for use of the Farm & Home Center. The results of these two activities will impact our choice of a caterer and venue.

Announcements
Dues Invoices are out
The Dues Invoices included an increase to $101 quarterly, $202 semi-annually or $404 annually. They may be paid by credit card at meetings. Or they can be made payable and mailed to: Rotary Club of Lancaster; P.O. Box 1387, Lancaster, PA 17608. There are also options to pre-pay for lunch fees. They are for 13 weeks, 26 weeks, or 52 weeks at $16 per week. Any meeting paid and not attended will be donated to the Club. There will be no refunds for this service.

Rotary Rendezvous meeting October 26
Anyone who is interested in joining our committee, looking for fellowship, or simply a night out, please join us for Rotary Rendezvous on Wednesday, October 26 at Stumpy's Hatchet House located at 405 Granite Run Drive Suite 405 Lancaster, PA 17601.
RSVP's are required by Friday, October 21st, so we can complete our reservation for the lane. Cost is $40/person to throw axe, and a non-thrower is $15/person. Stumpy's serves nonalcoholic beverages and light snacks BUT allows outside food and drinks/BYOB into the facility.
Arrive anytime between 5-5:30pm for drinks and fellowship. Then 5:30-7:30 is Hatchet Throwing + Fellowship

Refugee Center Needs Career Mentors
Immediate Need for a Mentor with an Insurance Background.
Josh McManness announced the Refugee Center's new Volunteer Career Pathway Mentoring Project. They are looking for volunteers to meet one-on-one with a participant that needs to improve their skills so they can fit into the workplace in a field related to their profession. This includes language skills, licensing, and an orientation to career positions and training available in their profession. The key to this program is to relate to the needs of the participant.

Power Packs Needs Volunteers
Power Packs is a great program in many local school districts that provides a recipe with ingredients for a meal, as well as some staples like cereal, fruits and milk to help support students over weekends. Years ago our club helped financially to get this program up and running. Since then we have been providing volunteers, special request items like crock pots and occasionally funding gifts.
This school year, weekly on Wednesdays we will serve as we pick up prepackaged boxes (the packs) for over 60 families and deliver them to Washington Elementary and Reynolds Middle School. We are looking for volunteers for this school year. It takes about an hour on Wednesdays, but does not overlap our Rotary meeting. Large vehicles like trucks, vans and SUVs are great, but we split some loads so smaller cars can help as well. We ask for availability and provide a schedule. You do not need to be available every or even most weeks to be an important part of this service. If you would like to learn more, please let the coordinating volunteers, Clint Krushinsky or Amy Lewis, know.
