Responding to the Covid Economic Crisis
The United States has experienced one of the greatest economic downturns in history due to the sudden onset of the SarsCov-2 pandemic. The Federal Government has taken unprecedented action to provide relief to households and businesses affected by the crisis. In the process, government deficits and debt have reached levels not seen since World War II. In her talk, Dr. Nersisyan will give her reflections on the impact of Federal Government relief spending on the economy and whether government deficits and debt are on an unsustainable trajectory.
Yeva Nersisyan is a Research Scholar at the Global Institute for Sustainable Prosperity and an Associate Professor of economics at Franklin and Marshall College. She received her B.A. in economics from Yerevan State University in Armenia, and her M.A. and Ph.D. in economics and mathematics from the University of Missouri-Kansas City. She is a macroeconomist working in the Modern Money Theory, Post Keynesian and Institutionalist traditions. Her research interests include fiscal and monetary theory and policy, banking and financial instability and regulation, and macroeconomic policy. Yeva has published a number of papers on the topics of shadow banking, liquidity creation, the Glass-Steagall Act, the Green New Deal and Modern Money Theory. Currently, she is co-editing the Elgar Companion to Modern Money Theory. She teaches Macroeconomics, Money and Banking, Women in the Economy, Macroeconomic Stability and other courses at Franklin and Marshall College.

Diversity & Inclusion Rotary Book Club
As we continue learning new ideas and hear new perspectives regarding today’s topics through our Diversity and Inclusion Committee, a suggested reading for an upcoming book club is Uncomfortable Conversations With a Black Man, by Emmanuel Acho. This is merely a suggestion and we hope that you might like to join in the conversation.
Howard Hanson has agreed to lead the Rotary Book Group. Howard P. Hanson is an Assistant Principal, J. P. McCaskey High School Campus. He has been a teacher and administrator for the SDL for 18 years. A 1982 graduate of Earlham College, he has been a Desegregation Consultant to the Massachusetts Department of Education and has worked on multicultural education and equity issues for years. He has been involved in equity and diversity work for the District and facilitated a similar book study for the District’s Equity Steering Committee. He has also presented to the Millersville University Social Justice Initiative on several occasions.
Howard has proposed the following dates for the discussion: 3/4, 3/18, 4/8, 4/22, and 5/6.
Time: 5:00-6:00 pm.

Board Election is upcoming for three available seats. Within the next several days, you will be receiving biographies and ballots for the members who will be running. These will be sent via email and/or snail mail. In order to count the votes in a timely manner, we ask that you return the ballots to Kathy Hainley before February 25. Election day results will be March 3, 2021.
A special thank you to the candidates who have graciously accepted becoming a choice on the ballot. The candidates are Incumbent Alicia Moranz (up for re-election), Jason Asbell, Gil Bixler, Kaitlyn Blosser, Jenn DeWalt, Josh McManness and Rakesh Popli.
Something that has been missing since the beginning of the pandemic are the highly connected conversations around the tables over lunch at our regular meetings. Starting at next week’s meeting we will begin having “Table Talk” time from noon till 12:15. The way that it will work is that when you log into the meeting you will be greeted by Kathy, Ben and Rob. You will then move into a breakout “room” with 6-8 other Rotarians and guests. Each week we will have a primer question for the groups to consider to get the conversation started. During the “Table Talk” please be generous in your sharing and in your listening. Make sure that everyone in the group is included in the conversation. Remember that this is weird for everyone, so please go out of your way to make people feel welcome. We tried this out at our holiday party with good results and learned a thing or two to make it even better. The good news is that all you have to do is show up. There isn’t even a button that you need to push. Please join us at noon this week.

Refugee Center and Community School Citizenship Program
Many of you have volunteered in the past with our Rotary Citizenship Program to help adult English Learners practice for their upcoming Citizenship test. This year, much like our Secret Angel Project, things will look a bit different because all of our Citizenship classes are being taught remotely via Zoom. Beginning on February 3rd, Rotarians will have the opportunity to join our Citizenship classes remotely via Zoom to help students practice their citizenship interview questions. Both morning and evening options to volunteer are available. There will be a volunteer process, training, and procedure that will be rolled out to you via email soon and during upcoming club announcements. For the morning, volunteers will be able to assist on Wednesdays from 10:00 AM- 11:00 AM. For the evening class, volunteers will be able to assist on Thursdays from 6:00 PM-7:00 PM. Please stay tuned for more information regarding how you can volunteer to help our students become U.S. citizens, and start thinking now about whether or not you’d like to volunteer in this exciting program.

Joy from John Herr: John Herr and Diane Koken celebrated their 40th Wedding Anniversary and the birth of their granddaughter this past weekend in Brooklyn.
Joy from Rob Gallagher: Rob Gallagher has a joy today that he just purchased Neighbors magazine that serves the residents of Bent Creek. The magazine has been in print for the past 7 years. He is super excited about it.
