Grass for cows, grass for crabs: how nutrient pollution from inland farms affects blue crabs and the fishing communities they depend upon. What are options for farmers and fishermen to build a sustainable future?
Gabe Andrews’ passion centers on the dynamic space where aquatic and terrestrial worlds mingle; and it’s taken him to the shorelines of the Chesapeake Bay, barrier islands of Georgia, and the Pacific beaches of Costa Rica. Much of his work has focused on sea turtle and diamondback terrapin conservation, but he also has experience in environmental education and endangered species protection. He graduated with a B.S. in Biology at Ohio University and earned his M.S. degree from the University of Vermont’s Field Naturalist and Ecological Planning program.
The Safina Center is an organization that fuses science, art, and literature to inspire a deeper connection to nature, especially the sea. Their work is shared through best-selling books, award-winning films, visual art, sound art, TED talks and more. Their Sustainable Seafood Program helps consumers, chefs, and retailers discover the connection between human health, a healthy ocean, fishing, and seafood. We translate seafood science so that you can make informed choices.

2018 RCL Basketball Extravaganza
The Basketball Extravaganza is seeking the participation of all Rotarians. Buying ads, and paying for them, buying tickets and paying for them, signing up to work any shift in the three-day event, and recruiting friends’, neighbors, and even democrats to help raise money for the largest of all our fundraisings activities will be greatly appreciated.

Mission Trip to Malawi
PP Bob McClenathan updated the club on his recent, very successful, mission aid trip to Malawi. Rotary sent a team of Eye, Dental, and Medical doctors to assist in the International Humanitarian Effort and provided training and aid to local health care providers in basic health issues.
A primary focus of this trip was in treatment of those with Albinism and its related side effects of vision impairment and skin sensitivity, as well as being outcast and attacked by local prejudice. People with Albinism have a 40-year life expectancy as a result of untreated skin cancer. In all, 85 patients were treated with special sunglasses and sunscreen for glaucoma, lazy eye, and skin cancer. The Bob had set a goal to see 2,000 overall patients and they were able to see 1,987. Bob also personally donated a special optometry device to a local health center.

Rotary Means Business
The December Rotary Means Business event will replace the Rotary Rendezvous that month. Sponsorships are still available, and the committee is seeking 4 sponsors at $200 each in order to keep this a free event for participants.
Next Meeting - Dress Code Relaxed
Pres. Althea gave the go ahead for members to relax the normal dress code and be silly and wear a costume, if you want, for our next meeting.
