Barbara K. Altmann, Ph.D., began her duties as president of Franklin & Marshall in August 2018. She was named the College’s 16th president in May by unanimous vote of its Board of Trustees.
A scholar of French medieval language and literature, Dr. Altmann had served as the provost at Bucknell University since 2015.
President Altmann, a native of Canada, received her bachelor’s degree with honors in romance languages at the University of Alberta. She earned her master’s degree in French language and literature from the University of Toronto, and her doctorate in medieval French language and literature from the same university.
Prior to her arrival at Bucknell, Dr. Altmann served for more than 25 years at the University of Oregon. She was a professor of French, chair of the Department of Romance Languages and director of the Oregon Humanities Center, before spending her last three years at the university as senior vice provost for academic affairs. She also served as an assistant visiting professor at Dartmouth College.
President Altmann has written or edited four books and written numerous articles, reviews and conference papers in her field of expertise. Joan Espenshade Honored
In March for Women’s History Month, U.S. Rep. Lloyd Smucker (Pa.’s 11th Congressional district) honored Power Packs Project founder, Joan Espenshade, on the floor of the House of Representatives.
“I would like to recognize Ms. Joan Espenshade, a woman from Lancaster, Pennsylvania, who gave back to our community by creating an extraordinary program to feed those in need,” Smucker said. “In 2005, Joan learned that some local children were food insecure on weekends when the school’s free lunch program was not available to them, so she decided to step in and help parents make better use of their limited food dollars.”
Smucker noted that Espenshade founded Power Packs Project to provide food and nutritional information to low-income families. Today, Power Packs serves families in 45 schools in 13 school districts in Lancaster, Pa., and three school districts in Lebanon, Pa. “Her vision and impact can still be seen as the program continues today,” Smucker said during his tribute to Espenshade.

The Club is hosting a student for the 2019-20 school year; he is an outstanding 15-year-old young man from Mexico who will arrive in August and return home the following June.
This young man enjoys movies, video games, music, skateboarding, soccer, volleyball, tennis, Taekwondo, robotics and computers. He would also like to explore acting. He lives with his parents and older brother. He has studied English for 11 years and considers himself fairly fluent in English. He has no health concerns.
We MUST quickly find three host families in the Hempfield School District for this young man; each family will host for about three and a half months.
