“Full of plastics – Our Oceans, Our Environment, Ourselves”
Humans have been altering Earth’s surface since we first began domesticating animals and plants, but our ability to change the environment has increased dramatically with the advent of technology. One of the most important technological advances was the creation of plastic as a lightweight, versatile and strong material. Yet plastic now affects the global environment in a myriad of ways; understanding its origin, use, and distribution is important in clarifying its current environmental impact.
Dr. Carol de Wet, Professor of Geoscience, Department of Earth and Environment, at Franklin & Marshall College
Carol received her Bachelor’s degree from Smith College with a double major in Geology and English Literature, her Masters of Science degree from the University of Massachusetts in Geology, and her PhD from the University of Cambridge, England.
After a post-doctoral appointment at the University of Kentucky, Carol and her husband were appointed at Franklin & Marshall College where they have both taught for the past 29 years. She is a full professor, holding an endowed chair in Geoscience.
She has served the College in a number of roles: as Associate Dean of the Faculty, Department Chair, Special Assistant to the President and Provost on Women and Family Issues, Special Assistant to the President for Environmental Stewardship & Sustainability Issues, and Associate Director of the Faculty Center.
In addition, Carol started a collaborative program in the School District of Lancaster whereby F&M science majors teach hands-on, inquiry-based science in a number of local elementary schools. This program has been running continuously for 19 years, bringing F&M students’ enthusiasm for science to thousands of diverse students in the School District of Lancaster.
She has published numerous scientific articles based on her research, as well as articles relating to women and retention in STEM fields (science, technology, engineering and math).

Rotary Ski Trip
Bill Boben remined the Club of the upcoming Annual RCL Ski Trip & Rolling Happy Hour!
Our annual Rotary ski pilgrimage this year is headed back to Elk Mountain Resort. As the Elk Mountain saying goes, "Vermont Skiing without the drive". The Rotary Club of Lancaster will again be joined by the Sunrise Rotary Club in sponsoring the Event.
The date is Thursday, February 6, 2020. We will meet at 5:45 am with the bus departing at 6:00 am from the Lancaster Country Club arriving by Executive Coach at Elk Mountain around 9:30 am. Our group will ski, board and socialize on the Mountain and in the Lodge until about 4:00pm before heading home.
The bus ride home will feature the ever popular. Rotary-rolling-happy-hour with song and tale. We mill make a quick pit stop on the way home and visit our friend Angelo at Aracaro & Genell Italian Restaurant in Olde Forge for salad and pie. The projected trip cost is $90 for the round trip coach, continental breakfast, day of skiing, and happy hour refreshments. Rental skis, boots, and poles are an additional $26. Please make checks out to the Rotary Club of Lancaster which will be collected on the bus on our way to the slopes. Dinner is Dutch treat.

Tip-Off Auction January 29th
Donations are being accepted for an auction to hopefully raise an additional $5,000 for the club, as an extension of the Tip-Off Tournament. Transmitter Committee Meeting January 29th
We are rapidly approaching the end of the Rotary year with 19 Transmitters to go!
The committee needs volunteers to chair the committee, reporters and editors to make this weekly communication happen. Duffy Johnson & Andy Fletcher will have served for two years at the end of June. Prior to this service, Jon Walker & Jonas Kauffman served two years doing the same.
The Club is in dire need of the commitment of some members to take over this weekly task. Please attend the meeting on the 29th of January for more information.
Lancaster Penn Square Rotary Club Valentine Fundraiser
Kay McClenathan, PP Bob’s lovely wife and better half, presented an opportunity for a Valentine’s Day gift. Heart cut-outs will be hung from the downtown lampposts and include a loving message of your choice. “Fur baby” cutouts of a dog or bone will be hung from the fence along Binn’s Park. Lisa Groff celebrated her Dad’s 90th birthday, Bob Groff, with PP President Wally Otto present telling stories, jokes, yarns and anecdotes. Wally stated all the stories were true. Bob Minney told me Wally would never make-up a story unless it was true.
Jen DeWalt is heading to Belgium to visit her host family who she met during a Rotary Exchange 30 years ago! A testament to the strength of Rotary!
Speaking of PP Bob Minney, the State of Florida has made contact with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and said enough is enough. Please, we’ve had enough of your Minney, he’s outstayed his welcome.
