The transition is over. Each of us received a priority email recently saying that this week’s meeting is a critical milestone for our 2023 planning, and not to be missed. It will set the direction for Club business and the priorities for our restructured committees -- and each of us has a role to play. There will be no Zoom Meeting this week.
As stated in the email, our leadership is “extremely excited to announce that we will be having a committee meeting kick-off this Wednesday.” All the committees, except the every-member Community and Fundraising Committees, will get together during the regular Wednesday meeting. Committee work is the heartbeat of Rotary’s mission, where everything happens.
It’s expected that everyone, as committee members, will attend and get to know their teammates. All Pillar directors and their committee chairs will be there. The Executive Committee and Board feel strongly that the new, streamlined restructuring will result in RCoL projects that have sharper focus and maximum impact.
The 10 committees will meet individually in the Farm & Home Center to enable members to get acquainted with one another, trade contact info, arrange meeting schedules, assign each member’s “area of focus” and start to strategize for the year.
The Board had decided earlier to focus every other week’s luncheon meeting on lively discussions and Q&A’s on committee goals, programs, and challenges. These meetings are designed to keep us centered on service without detracting from our high-quality guest speaker programs on the alternate Wednesdays. Both meeting formats are stimulating and enjoyable, but we need all Rotarians to participate.
We have a common purpose and want our shared Rotary experience to be exciting, fun, and fulfilling. Let’s start the New Year with renewed commitment and energy – and a huge measure of Rotary fellowship. See you Wednesday!
Dave Hosler introduced our speakers, Peggy McFarland & Kristin Kurjiaka. They told their personal journey as friends who became much closer when Kristin donated a kidney to Peggy. Peggy also mentioned that she now has 3 kidneys since they don't remove the diseased kidneys. The longest waiting lists are for Kidney and Liver donors, but these can be made from living donors since we all have 2 kidneys and the liver regenerates. Today kidney dialysis is a last resort since it has many side effects. Peggy and Kristin encourage everyone to check "yes" to be organ donors when we renew our driver's licenses. One anecdote: Peggy said that she was afraid she might inherit Kristin's shy nature and wanted to keep her outgoing spirit, so when they were recovering from their surgery in the hospital, Peggy made a point of being the life of the party on their floor. She hasn't changed and her love of life shines brightly.
The Dues Invoices included an increase to $101 quarterly, $202 semi-annually or $404 annually. They may be paid by credit card at meetings. Or they can be made payable and mailed to: Rotary Club of Lancaster; P.O. Box 1387, Lancaster, PA 17608. There are also options to pre-pay for lunch fees. They are for 13 weeks, 26 weeks, or 52 weeks at $16 per week. Any meeting paid and not attended will be donated to the Club. There will be no refunds for this service.
Our Club is always looking for ideas to add to the list of potential programs. Thanks to those that have come up with ideas and to our terrific speakers, and to all who attend. If you have any ideas for programs, please contact the Meeting Planning Committee or any Board member, who will pass them along. The programs the Lancaster Rotary Club offers have been truly phenomenal.
