Christina Hartman is a non-profit leader and global advocate for democracy, fair elections, and women’s rights. Christina has worked as a senior manager at non-profits for more than 15 years. From start-ups, to organizations that need to become sustainable, to turn-arounds, she has managed the operations, finance, human resources, governance, fundraising, programs and advocacy of several high-profile non-profits, including Freedom House, the National Democratic Institute chaired by Madeleine Albright, and the Joyful Heart Foundation, and their affiliate offices in more than 15 countries.
Raised in Lancaster County, Christina took what Lancaster taught her about community and government accountability and shared that with others worldwide through her work in democracy and human rights. She has worked to advance the rights of all citizens in some of the world's most challenging dictatorships, including Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, and Sudan, where she has trained and supported ordinary people to believe in themselves, organize, and advocate to their governments for change and to hold these governments to account.
Christina has also spent time protecting the right of people around the world to have their voice heard through the ballot box and training activists to do the same. She has worked on voter education and election monitoring programs in Sudan, South Sudan, Afghanistan, and South Africa. Most recently, Christina was part of an international observation mission for Ukraine's 2019 Presidential election to ensure the integrity of the vote and use international presence to deter violence. To ensure the same rights for citizens here in PA, Christina is an active Board Member for Common Cause PA.
Tired of watching her own government not responding to the needs of its citizens, Christina left international work in 2012 to walk the democracy talk. In 2016 and 2018, Christina ran for U.S. Congress in Pennsylvania’s former 16th district.
Christina has channeled her domestic experience in politics back into the international arena and has trained more than 100 women candidates in Liberia and Ukraine on fundraising and communications, and serves on the board of Global Gain, which seeks to empower women in leadership worldwide. She currently works as a consultant from her home in Lancaster.

2019 Golf Outing
Brad Reynolds is announcing that the RCL Golf Outing will be held at Overlook on September 26th. Sign-up will start this week at the meeting. It will again be a scramble format and we look forward to having a good turnout this year. $65 for golf & beer.

Rotary Picnic
Sue Suter spoke on behalf of the Fellowship Committee to invite members to the Picnic in the Park, Sunday, September 15th, 1-5pm. The picnic will be held in Long's Park, Pavilion #2. Pork Bar-b-q and marinated grilled chicken will be provided, along with drinks. Guests may sign up to bring either a side dish or dessert to share. Tickets are $10 for adults, and free for children 6 and under. Please stop at the table in the back of the room during Wednesday meetings to sign up and purchase tickets. Prizes for corn hole competition.
Rotary Summer Youth Experience Update
Bill Boben reported on the program RCL has funded for years as part of our commitment to the Lancaster Community.
The grants impacted more than 1000 campers ranging in age from 5 to 17 years-old. The geographic emphasis was Lancaster City and the immediate surroundings.
Program goals are to learn and enhance leadership, social and academic skills through the following:
Increased awareness of civic responsibility.
Youth engagement and positive adult relationships, role models, mentors, tutors.
Youth skill enrichment- academic, arts/music and earth friendly environmental practices.
Through our matching fund partnership with the United Way we were able to leverage our $10,000 into a $20,000 program.
Ten programs were funded this year: Horizons at LCDS, Faith Tabernacle Academic Summer Camp, CAP/Crispus Attucks Media Literacy Camp, Science Factory-STEM Youth Access, Mix at Arbor Place, Camp MFE, San Juan Bautista Summer Camp, Lancaster Rec Junior Leader Program, DeMuth Foundation/Lancaster Museum of Art, and Scaling Walls a Note at a Time (SWAN)
A video was presented about 36 children of incarcerated parents who were selected to attend the camps.

Tom Baum reports that the Pirates visited the White House and was relieved that Wally Otto passed the security clearance.
We must report that Joseph “Gabby” Hartmann, age 94 and one of Columbia's local legends passed away on Saturday, October 5th, 2019.
Although not a Rotarian, Gabby always kept us abreast of happenings in the County.
