My three siblings and I had very happy childhoods growing up in Lancaster Township. My father was an obstetrician and my mother was a nurse. I am a proud product of the public schools here; I graduated from McCaskey in 1981. I learned about the value of different perspectives and creative problem-solving. At McCaskey, we had a diverse student body. I learned to be comfortable with all different kinds of people, and I learned to listen to people. That has also helped me in my career.
I majored in Latin American Studies at Wesleyan and learned to speak Spanish. After college, I went to Washington, D.C., where I worked as a criminal investigator for court-appointed Attorneys in the District of Columbia. Many of the lawyers who I worked for there just went through the motions and did not care about what happened with their clients. That experience showed me that not everyone gets the same representation. My frustration upon witnessing a legal system that doesn’t serve people motivated me to go to law school to become a public defender. I wanted to work towards the ideal of equal justice under the law.
In 1996, I moved home to Lancaster to be with my parents, as my dad was struggling with cancer. I joined the Lancaster County Public Defender’s Office. I started my own practice because I wanted more freedom to stand up for the values of my community. I still represent people in the criminal justice system; I have also represented people in civil rights actions. I met my law partner by working together on a wrongful death case which occurred at the Lancaster County Prison in 1998. We have worked to hold the County Prison accountable and help reform its practices. We have had over a dozen similar cases over the years, and there is still a lot of work to do.
I believe the idea of equal justice under the law includes the principles of fairness and impartiality. These principles remind me of the Book of Proverbs, where we are called to “Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute,” and to “speak up and judge fairly and defend the rights of the poor and needy.” (Proverbs, 31, 8-9). I have taken that to heart in my career as a Defense Attorney and will continue to heed that call as the District Attorney.

From the Podium
Rob Gallagher opened the meeting as Acting President. Rob shared that he went to Italy for a family vacation and wedding, came back and found out he's President. While the members shared a good laugh, the fact is that Rob is graciously standing in for President Jeremy DeBord for today's meeting.
Rob encouraged members to not only recite, but to really think about and focus on the 4 Way Test. It has been a tenet of Rotary for over 95 years, and has truly impactful ideals for us to practice and positively impact those around us.
Tip Off Tournament
Terry Radcliffe reminded the Club that this year’s event will be held November 15th through 17th.
He also told the Club that the Committee needs help from all Rotarians to help stuff tickets and address envelopes on Wednesdays, October 2nd, 9th, 16th & 23rd at 10am in the back of the room at the Farm and Home center. Just show up to help.
RCL Golf Tournament
RCL Golf is now scheduled for Thursday October 10th at Overlook. Please signup, its only $65 for golf, cart and dinner and beer. Tee times start at 12:15. Non-Rotarians are welcome.
Power Packs
Clint Krushinsky spoke with members regarding the Power Pack program. He got some great news yesterday. Washington Elementary went from about 40 packs all of last year to 136 this year. So that means we need more volunteers on Thursdays afternoons about 2:30pm. We need hands for packing and at least one additional vehicle to carry the Power Packs. If you would be willing to help, please get in touch with Clint.

Dave also told a story in honor of President Jeremy DeBord. A man named Henry had passed, and left $30,000 for his funeral. Following his service, a friend of his widow Sarah, said that Henry would be very pleased with the lovely arrangements and asked if Sarah spent the entire allotted amount. Sarah told her friend that she had spent $6500 on the funeral, donated another $500 to the church, spent about $1,000 on food and drink, with the rest going to a memorial stone. The friend did the math in her head and was surprised at the cost of a stone. She asked, well how big is the memorial stone? Sarah said the stone is 2-1/5 carats!

A concern by Rob Gallagher that his property in Christiana has been invaded by the Spotted Lantern Fly. Rob welcomes any questions and offers assistance in combating this interloper.
Tom Baum reports that the Pirates visited the White House and was relieved that Wally Otto passed the security clearance.
We must report that Joseph “Gabby” Hartmann, age 94 and one of Columbia's local legends passed away on Saturday, October 5th, 2019.
Although not a Rotarian, Gabby always kept us abreast of happenings in the County.
