We’re not promising that planes will fill the sky. Or that the classic cars will out-dazzle the summer sun. But we do claim that our annual “Wheels & Wings” has become an exciting and successful new fundraising tradition. This year's event is scheduled for Saturday, June 24 at Lancaster Airport and Brethren Village. Hear how it’s shot from a novelty idea into a major local festival and become our Club’s largest fundraiser. Get a sense of how each of us has a vested interest in its success and why we need all hands on deck for a day of volunteering, fellowship and fun.
At our January 18 meeting, Rotary Club of Lancaster members who are already planning the event will present “Everything You Always Wanted to Know About the Wheels and Wings Festival and 5K But Were Afraid to Ask.” The festival typically features up to 250 classic cars competing for trophies, about a dozen aircraft during the all-day fly-in, and about 110 runners vying for medals in various age categories. It also includes live music and food vendors. Public attendance ranges from 800 to 1200. “We definitely have room for growth,” Jamie Alton says.
Our fellow Rotarians will tell us the story behind the scenes and the work for months that goes into making the event even possible. They will also present a final update on the Summer 2022 results and explain how the proceeds help support the Summer Youth Experience and other initiatives.
Committee work received a huge boost as 56 members were in attendance to meet with their committees, set priorities, and develop 2023 action plans. President Tug and Secretary Eric teed up the working meeting by reviewing the new, streamlined, and more highly focused committee alignments and clearly defining what the committees were expected to accomplish during the meeting. Committees are still where our service work takes shape. The former 32 committees have been realigned into 12 – still a fairly large number but less unwieldy and fragmented than the previous 32. All RCL members belong to either the Community or Fundraising Committees, in addition to one of the remaining 10. All 10 of those committees met with varying representation. The largest group was the Meeting Logistics committee with 11 in attendance. Next was the Fellowship committee with 10 in attendance. At 1:30 PM all committees had forgotten about the time and were busy working.
RCL International Service Project Opens Opportunities for Members
Under the guidance of PP Bob McClenathan, chair of District/World Committee, and with Board approval, Rotary Club of Lancaster will soon partner in important healthcare projects in Zambia, in south-central Africa. The 7-day projects in April provide opportunities for donors and project volunteers to supplement global grants provided under Rotary’s disease prevention area of focus.
The projects will provide eye, dental and medical exams, in addition to equipment and training. Our club is primary sponsor of the eye team and will be associate sponsor of the medical and dental grants.
Interested RCL members may donate before January 31 by sending a check to Crystal payable to Rotary Club of Lancaster and marked for the Zambia International Service Project. Reminder: Dues Invoices have been sent
The Dues Invoices included an increase to $101 quarterly, $202 semi-annually or $404 annually. They may be paid by credit card at meetings. Or they can be made payable and mailed to: Rotary Club of Lancaster; P.O. Box 1387, Lancaster, PA 17608. There are also options to pre-pay for lunch fees. They are for 13 weeks, 26 weeks, or 52 weeks at $16 per week. Any meeting paid and not attended will be donated to the Club. There will be no refunds for this service.
Our Club is always looking for ideas to add to the list of potential programs. Thanks to those that have come up with ideas and to our terrific speakers, and to all who attend. If you have any ideas for programs, please contact the Meeting Planning Committee or any Board member, who will pass them along. The programs the Lancaster Rotary Club offers have been truly phenomenal.
