Trending issues in cyberspace: Building security for individuals and organizations
Jan leads Fair Winds Consulting, LLC, providing project-based consulting and speaking services in the areas of cyberspace, education, leadership, and diversity. Previously she served as chancellor of the College of Information and Cyberspace at National Defense University after having retired from the U.S. Navy in the fall of 2012 at the rank of Rear Admiral (Upper Half).
RADM Hamby’s military career focused on the employment of telecommunications, space and computer systems to make information available for command and control of the Force and to enhance decision making at all levels of the chain of command. Her service included two command tours at a regional telecommunications and networking site in the southeast United States and of a major information hub in Italy supporting military communications from Iceland to Iraq. Her Washington, DC service included providing analytic support to the Chief of Naval Operations to validate and justify Navy investments in space, cyber and information programs. She was the senior leader of the U.S. Navy Information Professional Officer Corps and is credited with developing its mentorship program and directing implementation of its professional qualification program that subsequently became the model for qualifications across the Information Warfare community.
During a one-year assignment in Baghdad, Iraq, Jan played a key role in untangling information disconnects and made substantive contributions to the Coalition Force’s second campaign plan. As a flag officer she directed the global operations of the Navy’s offensive and defensive cyber forces, served as the director of the North American Aerospace Defense/U.S. Northern Command telecommunications and computer networking efforts, served as Vice Director for Command, Control and Computer Systems on the Joint Staff and was Deputy Chief Information Officer for the Department of Defense’s operational telecommunications and computer networks and cyber technology infrastructure.
Highly decorated, Rear Admiral (Retired) Hamby’s highest military award is the Defense Distinguished Service Medal. She holds a Doctor of Management degree and master’s degrees in the Management of Information Systems, Business Administration and National Security and Strategic Studies. Her doctoral research focused on mitigating the impact of toxic leadership at all levels of the organization.
She is married to Dale Hamby, proud mother of two grown children and helps run Fair Winds Farm, the family sheep, alpaca, and lavender farm in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, and is an active knitwear designer and member of the fiber arts community.

Announcements
Table Talk time is Noon till 12:15
Something that has been missing since the beginning of the pandemic are the highly connected conversations around the tables over lunch at our regular meetings. Starting at next week’s meeting we will begin having “Table Talk” time from noon till 12:15. The way that it will work is that when you log into the meeting you will be greeted by Kathy, Ben and Rob. You will then move into a breakout “room” with 6-8 other Rotarians and guests. Each week we will have a primer question for the groups to consider to get the conversation started. During the “Table Talk” please be generous in your sharing and in your listening. Make sure that everyone in the group is included in the conversation. Remember that this is weird for everyone, so please go out of your way to make people feel welcome. We tried this out at our holiday party with good results and learned a thing or two to make it even better. The good news is that all you have to do is show up. There isn’t even a button that you need to push. Please join us at noon this week.
Thank you
Robert Gallagher

Refugee Center and Community School Citizenship Program
Many of you have volunteered in the past with our Rotary Citizenship Program to help adult English Learners practice for their upcoming Citizenship test. This year, much like our Secret Angel Project, things will look a bit different because all of our Citizenship classes are being taught remotely via Zoom. Beginning on February 3rd, Rotarians will have the opportunity to join our Citizenship classes remotely via Zoom to help students practice their citizenship interview questions. Both morning and evening options to volunteer are available. There will be a volunteer process, training, and procedure that will be rolled out to you via email soon and during upcoming club announcements. For the morning, volunteers will be able to assist on Wednesdays from 10:00 AM- 11:00 AM. For the evening class, volunteers will be able to assist on Thursdays from 6:00 PM-7:00 PM. Please stay tuned for more information regarding how you can volunteer to help our students become U.S. citizens, and start thinking now about whether or not you’d like to volunteer in this exciting program.
Thank you,
Josh McManness and the Rotary Refugee Center and Community School Committee

Let's All Sing Again!
In 2021 we resumed singing a patriotic song to open each of our meetings. We’ll also sing a group song the first Wednesday of each month and the Birthday Song when birthdays are recognized.
Singing is good for the soul! Yet we’ve had little or no opportunity the last nine months to croon, let alone bellow, except in the shower. So turn up your headphones or speakers and sing heartily. Jamie and I will provide piano accompaniment so you’ll have some support. It may be awkward at first to sing on Zoom, and it won’t be like singing at the Farm and Home Center, but it will give us a chance to stretch our vocal chords and diaphragms.
Let’s have some fun!
John Saeger, for the Music Committee
