"Dennis Downey - Pennhurst and the Struggle for Disability Rights” - Zoom Mtg
Dr. Dennis Downey earned a PhD in United States History from Marquette University in 1981, where he studied with the late William D. Miller. Since that time he has taught at Millersville University, where he is a Professor of History and Director of the University Honors College. His research and teaching specialties cover the history of American violence, and American social and cultural history, especially 1870-1920. He is developing a scholarly interest in the history of disabilities and social thought. Over thirty years he has had a role in a variety of professional and community organizations, and received several awards and citations. He served as President of the Pennsylvania Historical Association from 2005-2007.
During eight decades of continuous operation (1908-87), Pennhurst evolved from a model facility into the subject of tremendous public scandal and controversy before the federal courts ordered it closed and the remaining residents moved elsewhere. Twenty years after its closure, the Pennhurst campus was recognized as an International Site of Conscience and its history became associated with a national and international disability civil rights movement. The Pennhurst story serves as a reminder of Philadelphia and Pennsylvania’s critical role in one of the great freedom struggles in contemporary history. Dr. Downey is at work on a new book under contract with Penn State University Press:A World Apart: The Story of the Pennhurst State School and Hospital.

Our Club will be hosting an inbound exchange student for the 2021-22 school year. We also have an excellent outbound student applying this year who is a senior at McCaskey High School.

Rotary Global Grants Scholarship – District 7390 – 2020/2021 Rotary year
Rotary Global Grants Scholarships fund an awardee’s first year of graduate study abroad in one of Rotary’s six Areas of Focus (listed below). Candidates must live in or attend college in District 7390, which encompasses Adams, Cumberland, Dauphin, Lancaster, Lebanon, Perry and York counties in Pennsylvania.

Plan to pursue career in one of Rotary’s Areas of Focus (listed below).
Award is for first year only of graduate studies abroad
District 7390 will not fund any applicant’s study which is for the second or later year of a multi-year graduate study program abroad.
Minimum study budget of $30,000 per year. Award capped at $30,000.
Must be proficient in language of host country.
