"C. Emlen Urban, Lancaster's Architect Part Three"

Gregg will continue the facinating story and history of the City of Lancaster architecture and C. Emlen's impact.
Gregory Scott is the senior partner at RLPS Architects. A Registered Architect in 22 states, he was recently elevated to the American Institute of Architect’s College of Fellows, the highest honor awarded to members who have made significant contributions to the profession.
Gregg graduated from Penn State University and since 2002 has been writing a monthly architectural design column for LNP News.
His local involvement over the years has included past board positions at the Samaritan Counseling Center and the Pennsylvania College of Art & Design, as well as Lancaster City Council, serving as president from 1986 to 1988.
Lancaster City’s Architect: C. Emlen Urban
Gregg will highlight the life and work of Lancaster’s preeminent 19th and 20th century architect, Cassius Emlen Urban.
Although his formal education did not include a degree in architecture, Urban had a remarkable ability to successfully move between 21 different styles of architecture. Much of his work can still be seen today with notable Lancaster buildings including the Watt & Shand Building, Southern Market, the Griest Building and P.T. Watt’s residence, the Rosyln Mansion, just to name a few.
A photo tour of Urban’s work will illustrate his impact on our city today and foster an appreciation for the details that are easily missed when walking by these buildings at street level.

Wheels and Wings Festival & 5K – Event is Here!
Russ Harlan addressed the club with a reminder of the upcoming June 22 Wheels and Wings event. The committee is excited to report that $21,225 has been raised so far, surpassing last year. Members are urged to get involved and to come out for a great day at the Lancaster airport. A table will also be set up in the back of the room for meetings between now and June 22. Please stop by to gather more information and sign up to help.
Past President’s Summit
This past Tuesday & Wednesday a Past President’s Summit was held in Lake Norman North Carolina at PP Paul Quinn’s retreat “Quinn’s Cove. PP Bob Minney, PP Andy Fletcher & Special Attache Chip Kirchner represented the RCL. Patti Quinn acted as translator. (For PP Minney)
Much time was spent on the lake discussing all pressing issues of Rotary, the world and all of Minney’s problems. Many resolutions were presented, but nothing was accomplished beyond emptying bottles of beer, gin & bourbon. The attendees were well fed enjoying liver mush, fish tacos, NC BBQ and the like.
There was interaction with the local community and the four attended the Denver-Lake Norman Rotary Club Wednesday morning, where the four performed PP Paul’s Rotary song as their alter ego, “Paul and the Pips.”
PP Paul & Patti send all their love and their hellos. They reiterated that all are welcome in Lake Norman, but PP Minney not so much. PP Paul was overheard in his Gastonia, NC southern draw, “a little of Minney goes a long way!”
Although PP Minney’s conduct may have been questionable at times, it was he who planned the summit and made it happen. It never would have happened with out PP Bob, who also reminded everyone that “PP Wally Otto thinks highly of him.”
Additional information will be forthcoming, perhaps, if indeed any of the attendees can remember anything that did transpire.
Rotary Youth Exchange - Looking for Host Families!
The Club is hosting a student for the 2019-20 school year; he is an outstanding 15-year-old young man from Mexico who will arrive in August and return home the following June.
This young man enjoys movies, video games, music, skateboarding, soccer, volleyball, tennis, Taekwondo, robotics and computers. He would also like to explore acting. He lives with his parents and older brother. He has studied English for 11 years and considers himself fairly fluent in English. He has no health concerns.
We MUST find three host families for this young man; each family will host for about three and a half months. He will attend McCaskey High School. If you or anyone you know outside of Rotary is interested in this extremely rewarding experience or would like more info, please contact the committee chairs, Lisa Lewis (daytonduo@aol.com) or Jenn DeWalt (jdewalt@murrayins.com).
RCL Foundation Update
Nick Downey, representing the Rotary Foundation Committee, addressed the members. Nick, used a football analogy to describe the current situation- "We're at the 2 minute warning, let's get to the goal line." Nick stated that the Foundation Committee believes the year's goal will be met, matching funds are still available, and that the committee continues to have a table in the back of the room to help members with any questions and information about how to contribute and become a Paul Harris Fellow. Please stop by and help the Foundation reach the goal line.

Gil Bixler is very happy to report that Toys for Tots has found a new home at the Sears Auto Center, and he extends a big thank you to Rob Gallagher's wife Rachel for her help with securing this location.
Steve Stockwell welcomed his first grandson, Nathan Christopher, last Saturday. His parents Chris and Abby Stockwell and the grandparents are all ecstatic!
Lisa Lewis is over-joyed looking back at Prez Althea’s year and looking forward to New Prez Jeremy’s year.
