“Immigration and Capital Investment,”Professor Exequiel Hernandez
Professor Exequiel (Zeke) Hernandez is the Max and Bernice Garchik Family Presidential Assistant Professor. He studies how firms strategically use formal and informal external relationships to internationalize, innovate, and enhance their performance. His research is motivated by a pervasive managerial challenge: firms do not own all the resources they need to be successful and thus have to reach beyond their organizational and national boundaries to get them. This leads firms to establish external relationships with collaborators and rivals, domestically and internationally.
Zeke’s research explores how firms strategically access and manage these external relationships (i.e. their antecedents) and how such relationships affect globalization, innovation, and performance (i.e. their consequences).
Zeke’s research has three main themes. The first explores how immigrants function as conduits of knowledge that facilitate the foreign expansion and performance of firms. The second focuses on how networks and institutions jointly affect the innovation outcomes firms get from cross-national knowledge partnerships (e.g. R&D alliances). The third considers how firms strategically use corporate strategies (acquisitions, divestitures) to reshape the structure of their alliance networks, to enhance access to novel resources and protect existing resources. Zeke’s research has been published by top tier journals such as Administrative Science Quarterly, Management Science, Organization Science, Strategic Management Journal, and Academy of Management Journal.
Zeke was recently selected as the winner of the Emerging Scholar Award by the Strategic Management Society (2018), the Strategic Management Division of the Academy of Management (in 2017) and the International Management Division of the Academy of Management (in 2016). These awards recognize “a relatively young or new scholar, who displays exemplary scholarship that promises to have an impact on future strategic management practice.”

Rotary Youth Exchange - Looking for Host Families!
The Club is hosting a student for the 2019-20 school year; he is an outstanding 15-year-old young man from Mexico who will arrive in August and return home the following June.
This young man enjoys movies, video games, music, skateboarding, soccer, volleyball, tennis, Taekwondo, robotics and computers. He would also like to explore acting. He lives with his parents and older brother. He has studied English for 11 years and considers himself fairly fluent in English. He has no health concerns.
We MUST find three host families for this young man; each family will host for about three and a half months. He will attend McCaskey High School. Rotary Rendezvous
The next Rotary Rendezvous will be held on May 8th. The speaker will be Dr. Hager, a concierge doctor in the area. The Rendezvous will be held at Stoner Grill beginning at 5:00pm for social time, then meeting begins at 5:30pm. Attending this will provide a make up for you. Rotary Foundation Update
The Rotary Club of Lancaster contributions to the annual fund of the Rotary Foundation for our current year is $21,010. Our goal for the 2018/2019 Rotary year is $30,000. Of the amount given as of the end of April, $5,715 are contributions to the Polio Plus campaign. This amount is matched 2:1 by the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation. Our club is also credited with an $87,520 gift to the Permanent Endowment Fund of Rotary Foundation for the current year. Of our 212 active members, 41 have made contributions so far this Rotary year.
Thank you very much for keeping the work of the foundation in your minds. If you're interested, the invested balance of the foundation crossed the Billion dollar mark in the 2017/2018 Rotary year and stood at $1.127 Billion!
Wheels & Wings
Our spring fund raiser is set to take off on Saturday, June 22nd! Wheels & Wings will include a 5K run, car show, and fly in. There are three ways all Rotarians can help:
1. Become a sponsor for the event
2. Volunteer on the day of the event
3. Provide items for door prizes
This is a very important fund raiser for our club. Please get involved in whatever ways you are able.
Arbor Day Celebration
Last Friday members of the club planted trees around Washington Elementary School and in the residential area next door to the school. This project was funded by a Rotary District grant to the Lancaster County Conservancy. Fritz Schroeder, Director of Urban Greening for the Lancaster County Conservancy gave the club an update on theConservancy’s programs. The Conservancy is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year! Fritz expressed his appreciation for the Club’s support of the Conservancy’s work.
Thaddeus Stevens College Scholarship
During the commencement ceremony for our Rotary-McCaskey Mentoring Program, it was announced that a generous (and anonymous) donor has made a gift to establish a scholarship for a deserving graduate of our Mentoring Program to attend Thaddeus Stevens College! The scholarship will partially cover the student’s costs for two years. Thisis wonderful news and a tribute to the good work of the leaders and mentors involved in the Mentoring Program.
