President's Message

Congratulations to our new board members who were elected at last week's meeting…Brad McDowell, Drew Reisinger, Tom Engwer and Paul Friedrich!  Their two year term starts July 1, 2017 and we look forward to their participation on the board.  Just like the Academy Awards, it is an absolute honor to be nominated to run and we appreciate and thank Janet Meredith, Dean Wilkie and John Price for their willingness to serve the club on the board.
The holidays are upon us and it is time once again for our annual holiday meeting!  If this is your first year with Point West Rotary let me share our tradition for this meeting.  Our club members are generous all year long, supporting our two foundations; donating to or sponsoring our fundraisers; and giving to the many other requests for assistance that arise.   At the holiday meeting, many members also choose (not required) to make an additional donation to one or more of our three charitable options.  In addition to the Point West Rotary Club Foundation and the Rotary Foundation, this year one of your options will also be "50 Bikes for 50 Kids".
Through this organization, students are nominated based on their demonstration of the following character traits:  trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship.  Fifty students are selected to not only receive a new bike, but, with the help of volunteers on January 16, 2017, to build their very own brand-new bicycle.  They also receive a bike helmet and bike safety instruction.  More information on this organization can be found here.
See the article below for more details on our holiday meeting!
Yours in Rotary Service,
The Meeting
Walk the Wheel
President Desiree rang the bell and welcomed all. Darin Michaels led the Pledge of Allegiance. Marky Mark Mraule presented a pleasant little ditty concerning Santa’s bowel movements. Apparently it’s a favorite of a certain 3 year old. Desiree provided sad news we all feared was coming albeit not so quickly.  Our beloved fellow Rotarian Dick Prater passed away this day.  He was a founding member of Point West Rotary, a Past President, and a great friend to us.  He will be missed. Guests and visiting Rotarians were introduced. At the head table were Board Member Tim Maliepaard, Guest Speaker Cheewa James, Anne Baron and New Member Kristi Kendall.

New Member Induction

Membership Chair Bea Maurer and sponsors Tania Fowler and Keith Tronson inducted new member Karen McClaflin. She is the Chief Development Officer of Goodwill Industries, and has been with several nonprofits throughout the Sacramento area.  She calls herself a Promiscuous Diner, likes beer and beaches.  She was a California State Debate Champion being first in all High Schools in the State. Welcome to the club Karen!

Announcements & Bell Ringers

Maia Schneider and Brad McDowell provided a recap of the Brewfest. Out of the $120,000 gross receipts, a total of $58,772 in net proceeds will be going to community funding.  Many people were thanked and received many accolades.  It was announced Jeniece Thomas is the new Brewfest Chair for 2017!  Such excitement, and an excellent job. The Brewfest committee is having a new member orientation January 11th. Desirée proclaimed Maia, Brad and Tim Davidson PWR Rock Stars!

Tour of Christmas Lights

Past President and Assistant District Governor Jennifer Curtsinger announced the fun committee is sponsoring a Christmas lights tour on December 19th, with limo’s, lights, and food/drink. Cost is $35pp. Contact DeWana Ljung or Gary Pevey.

PWR Foundation Grant - Project R.I.D.E.

On behalf of your Grant Review Committee, Russ Fujii and Tom Harvey presented a $5,000 grant to Tina Calanchini from Project R.I.D.E. (Riding Instruction Designed for Education). Project R.I.D.E. Inc. is a nonprofit institution that provides therapeutic recreational horseback riding instruction to over 500 children and adults with special needs.

Tour of Business – Union Gospel Mission

Tim Davidson reminded the group about the tour of business to Union Gospel Mission that morning.

Holiday Meeting

President Elect Rick Bixler informed us about the holiday meeting December 16th. There will be egg nog, Santa and an Elf, mimosa’s and an ugly sweater contest. Be sure to bring a check(s) for the three donation boxes; The Rotary Foundation, the Point West Rotary Club Foundation and our charity partner this year 50 Bikes for 50 Kids. Breakfast for members and guests is on the club!

Dave Randolph

Dave rang the bell for his and his bride’s honeymoon. They went to Maui and had a marvelous time. Gifts were given. Dave presented a check for The Rotary Foundation.

Board of Directors Election Results

Rich Graber announced the winners. The new board members are Tom Engwer, Paul Freidrich, Brad McDowell, and Drew Reisinger.  The President Elect Elect is Carl Naake.  Congrats and thanks to all who ran.

Guest Speaker - Cheewa James

Cheewa is a Professional Motivational Speaker, and had some wonderful things to say. She spoke about South, West, East and North (the medicine wheel) and how these apply to our lives. I wasn't able to capture her ease nor way of delivery, so if you have the chance to see her somewhere please go.

One of our favorite meetings of the year - this Friday we'll be celebrating the holidays in style!  We'll start with a special breakfast including an omelet bar, eggnog and mimosas…FREE to all members and guests!
The Rotary Foundation
Please take a minute (okay, a minute and a half) to watch this video on The Rotary Foundation…in just a short time it really underscores the reason why we give to this organization.  Unfortunately, we didn't have time for this video at our meeting on December 2, but it's one we didn't want you to miss. • Donate blood now - We need your blood!  One of the many ways our club supports our community is through the donation of blood.  PWR will be hosting a blood drive in March and if you donate sometime this month, you will be eligible to donate again in March.  Check out the various locations at BloodSource and make an appointment today!
  • American River Parkway Clean up - see Dan Hall to sign up for the January 21st parkway cleanup
  • Jerry Reynolds will be our guest speaker at the January 6th meeting.  He is one of our favorite speakers and usually draws a big crowd.  This is a great opportunity to invite your friends and family…and prospective members…to a meeting!

As a Rotarian, I will:

  1. Act with integrity and high ethical standards in my personal and professional life
  2. Deal fairly with others and treat them and their occupations with respect
  3. Use my professional skills through Rotary to mentor young people, help those with special needs, and improve people’s quality of life in my community and in the world
  4. Avoid behavior that reflects adversely on Rotary or other Rotarians

Point West Rotary - with the collective energy and power of our members,  we do good things, change lives, make an impact, help the community be a better place to live,
leave a legacy.
It is through our combined passion, talents, skills, abilities and generosity that we make a difference in our world.

If you opted to pay your club dues in two payments - your second payment is now due!
The two-payment option was created a few years ago for the convenience of members, but it has now become a burden to our treasurer to have to track down outstanding payments.
If you have not yet made your second dues payment, please do so now.  Our club is required to pay dues to our district and to Rotary International on a timely basis every six months and we ask that our members help us meet those deadlines by paying their dues promptly.
