2014/15 Presidential Message

Welcome to the Rotary Club of Point West  -  Sacramento.  Our clubs 150+ members are energetic and diverse.  We represent communities from all over the Sacramento region and are committed to "Service, Fun and Fellowship." Point West may be a breakfast club but we are known for our energy, enthusiasm and irreverence.  This is our 30th year of supporting children in need throughout the greater Sacramento area and around the world.

We have four major fundraisers each year in which we partner with wonderful charity organizations such as WEAVE, Assistance League of Sacramento or Sierra Forever Families.

This August we are kicking off a completely new event for us – the Lunar Lunacy Fun Bicycle Ride  -  a full-moon, midnight ride through the Sacramento community, starting at Capitol Mall, winding through some of Sacramento's most beautiful neighborhoods and returning to Capitol Mall.  This is actually two rides in one:  a short 5 mile route designed for families with smaller children and a longer 16 miler for the more energetic and experienced riders.

Fall is time for the 20th annual California Brewers' Festival held in Discovery Park.  We work with many of the premier craft brewers in the region to present over 100 beers styles.  This event features food, entertainment and a beautiful outdoor venue that is enjoyed by over 4,000 lovers of fine craft beer.

Winter sees our Festa di Vino celebrating the areas great wineries and restaurants. This evening event features wines from throughout the region, celebrates some of our best proponents of "farm to fork" cuisine and finishes with silent and live auctions.

In the spring we hold our annual Golf Tournament at one of the areas world class golf clubs.  We typically have 144 golfers, some Point West Rotarians, some guests.  Entry fees and contributions from sponsoring businesses raise funds to help support our selected charity partner which, for our 2014 tournament is The First Tee California Eagles.

Our fundraising also supports organizations such as the American River Parkway Foundation, Salvation Army, Christmas Promise, Sacramento Children's Home, Folds of Honor and Women's Empowerment.  We conduct a blood drive in partnership with Blood Source and annually challenge our fellow Rotarians of other clubs to match this year-long effort to help save lives.

We are committed to mentoring and supporting our region's students and partner with educators and administrators at Thomas Edison Middle School to support their Language Institute tutoring program and at Encina High School through our Academic Scholarships, Business Academy, Rotary Youth Leadership Academy and, for those with a green thumb, the Encina Garden Project.  We also provide support to the Interact Club at Jesuit High School and the Rotoract Club of California State University Sacramento.  Rotary is an international organization and we promote cultural awareness and world citizenship with our Ambassadorial Scholarship and Rotary Youth Exchange programs.

Speaking of international involvement, our club members have been instrumental in raising tens of thousands of dollars through matching grants from Rotary International in support of the Uyoba School Project in Mfuwe Village, Zambia to provide structures, books, desks and teachers for village children in grades 1 through 7 as well as for the Khayalerthu Children's Center in South Africa.

As you can see, we work hard and partner with a lot of charitable organizations to achieve our goal of improving the lives of at-risk children in our community.  But, we make sure to enjoy ourselves while we are working and provide many opportunities to share fellowship and camaraderie throughout the year.  These events include our Cocktail Parties, Softball team, annual Bowling Bash and.  We actually have a Fun Committee focused on developing new ideas for fun events whose sole purpose is the enjoyment of being together.

We encourage you to come to one of our meetings and let us inspire you to join us as a member of our Rotary family.
